Dan Billingsley's Macro

Coaches, need some help.  Just got a lottery slot.  I am already signed up for Ironman Boulder on Aug 2.  Kona is Oct 10.  Should I still do Boulder to punch my ticket or look for a mid season 70.3?  Is there enough time to recover after boulder?  I think I will need to get a new season plan from Rich.

Help!

Dan.

    Hey Dan,

Congrats! Do you have big sunk costs for IMBoulder, beyond the entry fee? IMO, your goal for your first trip to Kona should be to enjoy the day and to show up with enough fitness to enjoy the day. If it's all the same (ie, either distance will do) punching your ticket at a half vs a full will significant reduce your training load and mental cost across the summer. Yes, you have enough time to recover from IMB and train back up for Kona, but everyone always underestimates the mental and other costs of getting back in the saddle for that second race.

At the end of day, it all depends on how much (money, vacation, head, and other) you have invested in Boulder.

Let me know what you think.

  • Rich, I found out that Chattanooga punched my ticket for my kona lottery slot. But I have a lot of friends doing IM Boulder and will plan to do both. I think it is doable. So I submitted another roadmap for you. Will need lots of advise this year.

    Thanks - Dan

Great! I'll plan this out for you before I leave for IMSG
