First Time Power User

Rich, just got the wheel and Power Tap.  I have never used power so I am lost.  I have seen a few referrences on the site and a couple tests but unsure.  I have no idea where to begin in order to understand power and which tests to use.  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Richard

  • Richard,

I'm moving this to the Power forum where you it will get more views. And please ask any specific questions you have so we can direct you. Welcome to training with power, which is only as valuable as the investment you make in learning how to use it.

  • No tests yet. Just ride for a week or so. Watch the numbers, see how they jump around, what makes it spike and what the various efforts look and feel like.

Once you get the hang of the numbers a little bit, pick a testing protocol and stick to it. Consistently using the same methodology is just as important as the methodology itself. The first tests will be lame. Most either "over cook it" and fade or realize they have a lot of gas left in the tank at the end. Testing is about learning to pace/dose your efforts. Each test will get better from an execution perspective.

    Enjoy!
  • Also to add to what Dino said.  It's definitely good to get a sense of the PM.  The more riding you do prior to a test the better target number you will have.

For me I did my first test and utilized HR and perceived exertion on the first test more than targeting a number.  I got my PM in the OS and did not even look at the numbers just went by the other two metrics as that's how I had been riding.  Chasing numbers on a test when you don't have the fitness is a sure way to blow up early.
