Latex Tubes & Valve Extenders

For this season I want to run latex tubes. My front wheel is 60mm in depth. I have had terrible luck with valve extenders so I have been using Butyl tubes with a built in 80mm stem.

I have looked at both Michelin and Vittoria and one of them makes 51mm tubes, and the other has a 60mm option. It seems like I am stuck with valve extenders again? One of them has a removable core. Could I completely replace the stem with a longer one so that it isn't an extender?

If I must use extenders which are the most idiot/bullet proof ones out there?

Thanks!

  • I have had great success with extenders when I a little plumbers tape on the threads of the stem before placing the extender on.
  • Just remember removable valve core is not the same as removing the whole stem which is typically only available on tubulars. So for a clincher latex tube you will need a valve extender since you are just removing the valve core since the stem is permanently fused to the tube.

I've had good luck with the Zipp, continental, maxxis and tufo valve extenders.

+1 to Dino, make sure you use some teflon tape on the threads for a good seal.

  • Are there some extenders where you can remove the core, put on the extender, and then re-add the presta valve on top of the extender? If so, what extender is that?

The worst problem I had with an extender was the simple kind where you leave the valve open and the extender goes on top. The valve somehow became closed deep inside the extender and it was right before a race and I couldn't inflate the tire. I also was never quite sure what the pressure was in this setup.
  • Peter, I believe I have exactly what you are asking about.

I unscrew the core from the tire valve, add the extender, then screw the core into the open end of the extender.  I can then inflate just like normal and then tighten down the core.  I think that's what you're asking for?

I had no prior experience with extenders before last year about this same time.  I needed an extender for Flo 60.  Someone recommended these Problem Solver extenders.  Different lengths available.  They do also make the type you have now....just get the one for removeable core.

  • I use the ones that Jeff dropped in the link for. Flawless and have never had an issue. DEFINITELY get the ones with the removeable core, so the screw for the valve is at the top where you can access it and know it is closed.
  • +1 on the problem solvers those work very well. The zipp and some other models also do the same job, I usually just get whatever is cheaper.

  • Thanks everyone.

I will go with 51mm Vitorria Latex Tubes with a 30mm problem solver extender. That should be perfect. I have a Zipp 101 rear wheel with wheel cover, I think the 51mm by itself will be good for that also.
  • X2 on Problem Solvers.... But this is one of those things I just dont get? WHY don't they just make a latex tube with longer stems? The market should be big enough, essentially anyone who needs a longer stem for a deep dish wheel would probably be interested in a latex tube of the same....
  • Great question by Tim! I've wondered the same thing. My Enve System 8.9 wheels are 85mm front and 95mm deep. My latex tubes were 3 years old and I replaced them with brand new just before San Juan. I remove the core, use extenders of the correct length, apply plumber's tape and PRESTO. Still it would be easier if you could buy them at the right length.
  • The Problem Solvers are great.

i carry these as spares :::Topeak valve extenders.      they just screw on.       and the valve is closed by twisting the end thingy.     slick.

One would think but I think we live in a tri bubble and think our niche is bigger than it actually is.  Almost all bike related components are made for road bikes and roadies rarely run deep dish wheels.  So the 50mm valves are more than enough for all the 30mm rims roadies use.

  • Peter....yes, I have the same rear wheel, Zipp 101 and I add the wheel cover.  The standard latex stem lines up right in the middle of the little cutout without the need for an extender.  I just need the extender for my front Flo 60.
