Ironman Chattanooga Training Camp
Team Choo,
My Ironman Chattanooga training camp is officially open for registration and is filling up rather quickly, in fact. So I wanted to create this thread to tell you more about the camp and highlight who's registered to join us in Chattanooga in August.
Dates: Thurs, Aug 13 through Sunday, August 16
Camp HQ: Doubletree, downtown Chattanooga
Camp Includes:
- 3 nights double occupancy lodging at the Doubletree
- Your parking and breakfast at the buffet each day.
- SAG on the bike course and training food (Gatorade Endurance and whatever else IM will have on the course will be provided for you during the camp)
- All instruction, of course
- Camp and sponsor schwag.
The camp schedule follows a progressive format, with each day building towards the next, with the goal of having you exit the camp several years and wasted races up the Ironman racing and training curve, with special attention paid to the application of these skills to every inch of your Ironman course.
- First, we teach you how to race Ironman in general and then introduce you to the application of these topics to the Ironman Chattanooga bike course specifically.
- Next, you go out on the course and apply ^this^ knowledge to the bike course.
- Then we debrief the ride, as a group. Now that you've seen the course we can talk about this hill, that corner, etc.
- Next we discuss "advanced" race execution topics: gearing, bike setup, bike fit, aerodynamics, pacing, nutrition, and hydration strategies for the swim, bike, and run.
- Then you go back out on Saturday to practice and refine these skills again.
- We meet Saturday evening for another debrief, to answer more questions, and then discuss Phd/Masters level topics of racing with power, pace, and Ironman training for the AG athlete, to get you thinking right about '16.
- Finally, you'll run one loop of the run course on Sunday, with all of ^this^ in your head.
These days, a training camp run by another coach is usually nothing more than lots of miles, maybe some discussion, and not much else. And there are often informal training camps organized by fellow athletes on Facebook, etc, that are really nothing more than a large group of people meeting in a parking lot to go for a ride, and then maybe confusing the hell out of each other by having dinner and talking about race execution topics that they really know nothing about.
Our Endurance Nation training camps are over-the-top educational events, with RorP bringing significant game to the task of teaching you how to race and train for Ironman triathlons effectively. They are also an unmatched opportunity to meet and network with your TeamEN teammates who will be racing Ironman Chattanooga with you, and so are probably the best real-world compliment to your Endurance Nation experience. We would like nothing more than to fill these camps with 100% TeamEN members vs the general public and the Ironman Chattanooga camp is well on it's way towards making that happen.
Go here for the complete camp schedule and registration details.
Thanks for reading and I hope you choose to join us in Chattanooga for this camp!

That's my better half, aka main sponsor.
Ok, I made that change, thanks!

Hey Coach Rick,
What are we up to in registrants for camp? Getting excited for a weekend of high volume.
Brandon DuMontier
Hey Brandon,
About the same number, I think, but I've been fielding q's and have sorta verbal commitments from about 4 other athletes. I may need to publish a drop dead date to get people to commit, or not, so I can move forward with some things on my end.
It's a great course and very nice to have the camp downtown convenient to everything.
Coach R,
Need to check with the Wife since this falls on our Anniversary , but pretty sure I'm in! I'll get it sorted and registered by mid next week if I get the OK. Boy, this one is going to cost me
EN Ambassador and '14 IMChat Camper Jim Hogan just signed up, bringing us up to 18 campers at this time.
Adding father/son team of Kevin and Michael Foote to the camp, for a total of 20 campers at this time.
Bryan, good to know about you and Mark, thanks for the heads up.
Regarding the swim, not an intentional tie-in but Jim Hogan made me aware of the event yesterday. I think what I'll do is communicate my thoughts on this to the campers and leave it up to them to register if they want to. But my first impression is that 8a is a bit of a late start, putting you guys deeper into the heat of the day and bumping the schedule into the discussions we have planned that evening. I prefer to have Friday be the big day because as is I have tired campers nodding off during my talk on Saturday . That said, last year most people opted to do 2 laps of the loop vs doing the whole ride, staging from a church parking lot out near Chickamauga. So that could work too.
Anyway, I'll let the individual campers decide.
Since camp will fall into Week 14 vs. 15, how would you address that in our training plan? Should we flip 14 & 15, or do 15, then 16 then 14? (I see that there are some post-camp adjustments to the beginning of Week 16 plan. I know we have some time on this I was trying to note the "big days" and wanted to make sure I have stuff scheduled right. Thanks!
Ship it to the hotel and have them hold it for you. I just turned in the camper names to the hotel so they should have your name on the list.
Do Camp Week, Wk 16, Wk 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.
At the camp I'll discuss modifications to make to your training week immediately after the camp
John
I just sent this out via email but posting here also as a backup:

Team Choo,
Well...there you go! Again, I look forward to seeing all of you next month!

- how is everyone planning to get from airport to hotel? Is it close enough to get a cab or are peeps renting cars?
- Anyone else considering the open water swim? I would likely be doing a shortened Sat. Bike anyway so just curious if others have the same idea... That also brings me back to the first question re: car rental in case we want to start at the loops....
Excited!
Between a cab, Uber (is there Uber in Chat?) or an airport shuttle (maybe the hotel has one, don't know), no reason to rent a car. We will either be riding or eating straight from the hotel. I imagine that enough people are driving here that you catch a ride with someone to the Sat ride start

Camp Nutrition -- I've been asked by someone what the nutrition plan is for the camp so putting it here for everyone.
Bottomline:
For the run, I'll designate one stop where Mariah will be with water for you to refill bottles, etc.
Enjoy!
Anyone with a Garmin 920XT have any luck importing these .gpx files? I seriously just spent an HOUR on the phone with Garmin support and they're unable to import them, on their own watches. Worked my way through TWO technicians and still no luck.
Hoping somebody on here can help? See you tomorrow.
-Jon
Do you know how to do it on a Garmin 510? I've never done it before and was hoping someone could help. If not, no big deal.
Thanks
Brandon
