Ironman Chattanooga Training Camp

Team Choo,

My Ironman Chattanooga training camp is officially open for registration and is filling up rather quickly, in fact. So I wanted to create this thread to tell you more about the camp and highlight who's registered to join us in Chattanooga in August.

Dates: Thurs, Aug 13 through Sunday, August 16

Camp HQ: Doubletree, downtown Chattanooga

Camp Includes:

  • 3 nights double occupancy lodging at the Doubletree
  • Your parking and breakfast at the buffet each day.
  • SAG on the bike course and training food (Gatorade Endurance and whatever else IM will have on the course will be provided for you during the camp)
  • All instruction, of course
  • Camp and sponsor schwag.

The camp schedule follows a progressive format, with each day building towards the next, with the goal of having you exit the camp several years and wasted races up the Ironman racing and training curve, with special attention paid to the application of these skills to every inch of your Ironman course.

  1. First, we teach you how to race Ironman in general and then introduce you to the application of these topics to the Ironman Chattanooga bike course specifically.
  2. Next, you go out on the course and apply ^this^ knowledge to the bike course.
  3. Then we debrief the ride, as a group. Now that you've seen the course we can talk about this hill, that corner, etc.
  4. Next we discuss "advanced" race execution topics: gearing, bike setup, bike fit, aerodynamics, pacing, nutrition, and hydration strategies for the swim, bike, and run.
  5. Then you go back out on Saturday to practice and refine these skills again.
  6. We meet Saturday evening for another debrief, to answer more questions, and then discuss Phd/Masters level topics of racing with power, pace, and Ironman training for the AG athlete, to get you thinking right about '16.
  7. Finally, you'll run one loop of the run course on Sunday, with all of ^this^ in your head.

These days, a training camp run by another coach is usually nothing more than lots of miles, maybe some discussion, and not much else. And there are often informal training camps organized by fellow athletes on Facebook, etc, that are really nothing more than a large group of people meeting in a parking lot to go for a ride, and then maybe confusing the hell out of each other by having dinner and talking about race execution topics that they really know nothing about.

Our Endurance Nation training camps are over-the-top educational events, with RorP bringing significant game to the task of teaching you how to race and train for Ironman triathlons effectively. They are also an unmatched opportunity to meet and network with your TeamEN teammates who will be racing Ironman Chattanooga with you, and so are probably the best real-world compliment to your Endurance Nation experience. We would like nothing more than to fill these camps with 100% TeamEN members vs the general public and the Ironman Chattanooga camp is well on it's way towards making that happen.

Thanks for reading and I hope you choose to join us in Chattanooga for this camp!

So James Brinkley should be me...

That's my better half, aka main sponsor.

Ok, I made that change, thanks!

  • Added Mike Crosby to the camp. 15 campers so far!

  • Added Brandon Dumontier, Kane Murphy, Eric DePoto and Eric's friend to the list. 17 camper so far!

    Hey Coach Rick,

    Hey Brandon,

About the same number, I think, but I've been fielding q's and have sorta verbal commitments from about 4 other athletes. I may need to publish a drop dead date to get people to commit, or not, so I can move forward with some things on my end.

It's a great course and very nice to have the camp downtown convenient to everything.

  • Bumping this thread to shake any camper maybes out of the trees. I've had side conversations about the camp with about 4-5 people. I need to start putting the room assignments together and coordinating with the hotel by the end of next week so if you're know your in, please register so I can tighten up the logistics. Thanks!
  • Coach R,

Need to check with the Wife since this falls on our Anniversary , but pretty sure I'm in! I'll get it sorted and registered by mid next week if I get the OK. Boy, this one is going to cost me

  • Scott: thanks for the heads up

EN Ambassador and '14 IMChat Camper Jim Hogan just signed up, bringing us up to 18 campers at this time.
  • Adding father/son team of Kevin and Michael Foote to the camp, for a total of 20 campers at this time.

  • Any tie in with the Chattanooga Open Water Swimming open water swim event in the river on Sat. the 15th at 6:45 am? Didn't know if it was a coincidence this was during camp weekend or not. Would love to get in some swimming on the course. I should be signing up for camp tomorrow along with fellow EN member Mark Nigh (I hope). Thanks.

Bryan, good to know about you and Mark, thanks for the heads up.

Regarding the swim, not an intentional tie-in but Jim Hogan made me aware of the event yesterday. I think what I'll do is communicate my thoughts on this to the campers and leave it up to them to register if they want to. But my first impression is that 8a is a bit of a late start, putting you guys deeper into the heat of the day and bumping the schedule into the discussions we have planned that evening. I prefer to have Friday be the big day because as is I have tired campers nodding off during my talk on Saturday . That said, last year most people opted to do 2 laps of the loop vs doing the whole ride, staging from a church parking lot out near Chickamauga. So that could work too.

Anyway, I'll let the individual campers decide.

  • Any thoughts on bike shipping? Just ship to the hotel and have them hold it or is there something special we should do?
  • Perhaps this is a micro thread question, but since we'll all be in the same boat, I thought I'd post it here...
Since camp will fall into Week 14 vs. 15, how would you address that in our training plan? Should we flip 14 & 15, or do 15, then 16 then 14? (I see that there are some post-camp adjustments to the beginning of Week 16 plan. I know we have some time on this I was trying to note the "big days" and wanted to make sure I have stuff scheduled right. Thanks!

Ship it to the hotel and have them hold it for you. I just turned in the camper names to the hotel so they should have your name on the list.

    Do Camp Week, Wk 16, Wk 16, 17, 18, 19, 20.

At the camp I'll discuss modifications to make to your training week immediately after the camp

  • Thanks Rich. Poor Week 14, never had a chance...
  • Is anyone coming from the DC area? If so, I'm more than happy to drive/carpool. Let me know.
  • Jonathan - I am heading to camp from Alexandria. I was going to ride together with Bill Granger, but last I heard, unfortunately, he had a bike crash and I haven't seen his name on the camp list anymore. I'll reach out offline about carpooling. Even if Bill is going, I can likely carry three bikes, so that should work

  • I just sent this out via email but posting here also as a backup:

    Hi,

Thanks for registering for my Ironman Chattanooga training camp next month! I look forward to sharing my Ironman execution experience with you and bringing you several races up the Chattanooga learning curve.

I have a couple things for you today:

    1. Please go here to download a .pdf containing all of the information you need for the camp. You were prompted to download this file when you registered but I'm just making sure you've downloaded...and read :-)...the information.
    2. Please complete this information form. Please do this as soon as possible so can have t-shirts made and delivered to the camp.

And if you have any questions for me about the camp, please just reply to this email.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing you next month!

    +++++++++++

  • Sorry, just sent out another email, this one about the organized swim opportunity, posting here for backup:

    ++++++++++++

    Team Choo,

Sorry about the second email, but I forgot something.

On Saturday of the camp there is an organized open water swimming opportunity. More information and registration is here. My notes for you regarding this swim.

The cost of this swim is NOT included in your training camp fee. If you wish to participate, please register for the event on your own.

Please note the timeline of an 8am swim and how this fits in with the camp. The schedule we followed last year for the camp was:

    • Friday: full 112mi bike + ~45' run, leaving from the hotel at about 7am.
    • Saturday: after riding the full course on Friday, many campers chose to drive out to the loop, parking at the big church on Nickajack (?) Rd, and riding two loops of the course (about 75-80 miles) and running a brick from their car there. This was a good plan, as the "stick" part of the course, taking you from/to Chattanooga from this church is very "admin-y." That is, the bulk of the course that you want ride, to get a feel for the terrain, etc, is the Loop vs the admin stuff from/back to Chattanooga.
So the swim on Saturday makes sense if your plan is to follow this shortened bike ride Saturday guidance above. Which is perfectly fine. The dozens and dozens of Ironman training camps I've done have usually featured a shortened day on Saturday so you can focus on riding the more technical parts of the course. You'll just need to hustle quickly from the swim to your car to the ride start at the church, etc.

But if your plan is to do the swim and ride the full course from the hotel, you will be in for a long day. Remember, the discussion session on Saturday (RR #2 debrief and other topics) begins at about 5:30p.

My opinion on the value of this swim:

The Ironman Chattanooga swim is about the most friendly, fast swim you can ask for you...downriver, with a decent current. It is extremely non-technical. If you have significant issues with open water swimming and are especially fearful of the swim, then this would be a good opportunity for you. However, if this is not you, then there is very little value, in my opinion, of incurring the significant admin costs of this swim. In other words, you should be focused on learning the bike course and be mindful of how the admin cost of this swim could impact this primary objective of the camp.

Well...there you go! Again, I look forward to seeing all of you next month!

    ++++++++

  • Couple of questions:

    - how is everyone planning to get from airport to hotel? Is it close enough to get a cab or are peeps renting cars?
    - Anyone else considering the open water swim? I would likely be doing a shortened Sat. Bike anyway so just curious if others have the same idea... That also brings me back to the first question re: car rental in case we want to start at the loops....

    Excited!

    Excited!

Between a cab, Uber (is there Uber in Chat?) or an airport shuttle (maybe the hotel has one, don't know), no reason to rent a car. We will either be riding or eating straight from the hotel. I imagine that enough people are driving here that you catch a ride with someone to the Sat ride start

  • FYI: I plan on doing the swim Sat. am and likely just doing 1-2 loops only afterwards.
  • Camp Nutrition -- I've been asked by someone what the nutrition plan is for the camp so putting it here for everyone.

    • I will have canisters of Gatorade Endurance available each morning before the ride, so you can mix bottles.
    • These canisters will go out with Mariah's vehicle when she is doing SAG for us each day. She will also have water with her and you're welcome to have her carry a day bag for you of whatever else you may need out there. She will also have a supply of tubes, a pump, simple tools, etc
    • HIGHLY recommend you bring a couple empty ziplock bags so you can carry powder and not be limited to having to find the car on the course.
    • I will NOT have gels or anything else. Gatorade Endurance, that's it, as everyone is very, very particular about their non-sports-drink nutrition solutions.
    • I will have Mariah roam about the course but she will also stop/be available at 2-3 specific locations on the course. I will publish these locations on Thursday night during the talk when I debrief the plan for the weekend.
    • Each of ^these^ SAG locations is also a location where you can get other stuff. IE, it's gas station, cafe kinda deal, stuff like that.

    Bottomline:

    • YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN CUE SHEET or other navigation solution.
    • Show up with whatever bottles and non-GE food you need (the camp will provide GE for you) to ride at most 40 miles self-supported. However, there will be a stop ~25 miles in...but I'm saying 40 miles because that's the second stop.
    • Show up with tubes, Co2, tools, etc to fix two (2) flats unsupported. You can stash your additional tubes, etc in the support vehicle.

For the run, I'll designate one stop where Mariah will be with water for you to refill bottles, etc.

  • I didn't see a route on Ride with gps for the run course so....... http://ridewithgps.com/routes/9774453
    Enjoy!
  • Thanks for the Run course!!

Anyone with a Garmin 920XT have any luck importing these .gpx files? I seriously just spent an HOUR on the phone with Garmin support and they're unable to import them, on their own watches. Worked my way through TWO technicians and still no luck.

Hoping somebody on here can help? See you tomorrow.

    -Jon
  • Jon, I'll catch up with you tomorrow. I can load the bike and run courses on your 920 in about 5 min. I can explain it also. See you at camp!
  • Bob,
Do you know how to do it on a Garmin 510? I've never done it before and was hoping someone could help. If not, no big deal.
    Thanks
    Brandon
