Mark's 2015 Micro Forum

Hi Coach P. I hope you're finally seeing some signs of spring in RI.

I'm in the Get Faster plan that is scheduled to end on 4/5 and then I'm to drop into the HIM plan ending on Victoria 70.3 on June 14. I found a half marathon on April 12th that I've signed up for to do my end of GF test. How should I restructure my plan for the next two weeks? I can think of a couple of options.

1. Add one more week to the GF plan and proceed as it's structured.

2. Do the bike and swim test next week and then load the HIM plan as scheduled but restructure it to get a couple of recovery days in that week.

3. Do one week of HIM training and then go back to the last week of the GF plan for testing.

I'm sure there are more options but I'll stop there. One other thing is that I just got finished with a big-ish bike week where I rode 5 out of 6 days. The days were not overly long but I did do FTP, Vo2, or ABP rides on all but one day and that was a short recovery ride. I'm not too trashed because it was spring break for us and if we weren't biking or running we were mostly sitting around reading and relaxing. (It's amazing how well I can recover if  I can sleep in every morning and hang out whenever I'm not working out.)

  • Hey, that's great news on the bike block...so jealous!!! image

I say you end the GF plan with bike /swim tests...then load the HIM plan...not to train hard in the first week but more to get back into a good routine / schedule for your HIM. You could do that regular week through WEd, drop the Thu long run for another ride (ABP? Up to 75')...friday as planned (Swim/short run)...then let me know what day the run is and we can adjust the weekend!!!
  • Thanks, yes it was fun. I'll do the testing this week for the bike and the swim And then load the HIM plan as scheduled. My race is on Sunday.
  • Hi Patrick,

I was looking ahead at the HIM plan for next week and I see there's a big day planned for Saturday. Since I'm doing the HM on Sunday as a test I assume that the big day is counter productive for a Saturday workout. Should I just move the big day to week 12 or just skip it and move on with the HIM plan as written. As for leading up to the HM, you suggested doing a 75' ABP bike on Thursday instead of the run, a swim and a light run on Friday and then I was thinking of a short run with strides on Saturday and then crush the HM on Sunday. How does that sound?

  • Your plan building into the race is perfect. Yes, I'd push the Big Day to next week!!

And let's make sure that you have done all the reading for the race strategy, etc, in the wiki!!
  • Thanks, I did start reading the race strategy for the HIM in the wiki. I think it's going to be an interesting HIM.
  • Hi Patrick,

I'm working towards Challenge Penticton in late August in IM intermediate plan. I'm looking ahead and planning the training out and, wouldn't you know it, life is getting in the way. There is a camp week/race rehearsal planned for the week of July 21st. However, we have a family reunion planned and we'll be leaving on that Friday. We'll be flying cross country and I'm not going to take a bike but we will be on the NC beach for a couple of days and then a cabin in W. Virginia on a lake for the rest of the week so I'll be able to swim and run just about every day. So here's my plan on how to adjust, please let me know what you think.

Move the first race rehearsal swim to Friday the 18th,

Move the bike and the run race rehearsal run to Saturday the 19th,

Move the second bike to Sunday the 20th and,

Move the long run to Monday morning.

Tuesday - DAY OFF! Emphasis added

    Wednesday Swim Optional

    Thursday FTP bike and pack

    Friday, travel

    Cheers,

    Mark

  • Mark, love it. Good call...bonus that you get to be the crazy guy at the family reunion. image
  • Well, my wife is doing Challenge Penticton too so I won't be the only crazy one there. I just hope the sharks have moved on from the NC coast by the time we get there.
