Learn me about Brisbane Australia

Sooooo, pop up work conference is now taking me to Brisbane Australia, 19 Apr - 02 May.  I'll be staying at the Oaks Aurora.  First, I'm kinda happy to be going some place that I can speak the local tongue somewhat (most of my travels are to SE Asia countries, troublesome for me to go from English to Japanese to Korean and back again).  I'll be conferencing it up from 0730-1730 weekdays, but will have off hours and the weekend to myself.  The hotel that I'm staying in has what appears to be a 1-2 lane lap pool and a 'gym'---quality unknown and no pictures on the website.  (I'm rather spoiled because my normal lodgings in Seoul, where I'll be the week prior, has a great pool and gym facility and easy access to a quality running trail.)  Would like to at least swim and run while in Australia.

Any Haus peeps got any insiders gouge on Brisbane?

  • Hi Roy,
I'm from Brisbane, you are going to love the city. Brisbane is an out door paradise running trails everywhere you won't have a problem, would recommend jogging down to the Botanical gardens or Southbank, there are plenty of runners there. If you are looking for some hills Mount Cootha not far. For swimming check out the Spring Hill baths, Centenary Pool and the Valley pool both 50m and within jogging distance. The Gold Coast is 45mins and the Sunshine coast an hour away for ocean swimming. I'll be just over the border NSW when you are in Brisbane if I get up to Brissie I'll drop you a note. Have an awesome time.
  • Hi Roy, I spend a bit of time in Brisbane too, in fact I will be there when you are from April 28 until May 1. I usually forgo swimming because my stays are so short, but the running trail along the river is great. Would be fun to meet for a run if we can!
  • Junior, Chris - Thanks for the feedback. Would love to get together for a jog or a meal. We can talk about how cool we are (I can go on for days on that topic image ) Keep me in the loop on both of your plans.
  • I've only been there long enough to change planes and fly to Auckland. There's an idea...ring up Quantas and spend a beautiful weekend in New Zealand.

  • Junior / Chris, thanks for the advice. I never actually got to the pool, the schedule didn't allow it. However, the running in downtown Brisbane was amazing. I was right by the river and hopped on the fitness trails and explored. The dual use (runners / bikers) got sketchy at times due to biker speeds, but it was enjoyable and made the two weeks there fun.
  • Hey Roy, sorry we didn't get a chance to meet up. My evenings were all taken up and wasn't training due to a bit of time off right now.
Glad you enjoyed the trails. I've had my fair share of near misses with bikes while running too! My flight home to NZ got cancelled with those storms, ended up stranded at an airport hotel for another night.
  • Chris, funny you say that about the flights. I flew out on the 1st and thought myself unlucky to have a 11 PM flight. I thought that until I heard that everyone on an earlier flight had to spend an extra night in Brissie and our flight was one of the only ones that got out due to timing. I didn't understand why the cab company laughed at me when I called for a ride to the airport, but quickly learned why. Sometimes its good to be lucky.
