Shock wave therapy?

Hello all...has anyone had the above? I am recovering from high hamstring injury (it's fray off the bone). Things feel better however doctor suggests shock wave to get it to heal. Am willing to give it a go however wonder if anyone has any thoughts on it. The web is divided on opinions if it works at all.

Have been through a year of physio, 3 PRPs, ART, and core strengthening already.

Thanks!

  • I never heard of that. What type of doc is recommending it? Is it still bothering you?
  • Did it last year when a high hamstring injury was not healing with ART, rest, walking hills, etc.
I was training for Placid. After each weekend's ride, the injury would flair and any progress with ART was erased. It was very painful to run.
I went and had last treatment on way to race. It was a miracle. It worked and I have not had recurring hamstring issues.
  • Wow, that's amazing...I've never heard of it. I need something and the PT is not helping.

  • @Mary Who did it for you?
  • Dr. Laurie Glasser at Orthopaedic Institute on Rte 34
I think they have a machine at another office too but she treats in Wall on Mondays and Wednesday's.
It is super painful in the beginning because the area is damaged and the treatment is designed to bring a lot of blood flow to the damaged tissues. Each treatment is a little less painful.
  • All, thanks for the input. @ Robert, Cleveland clinic do it locally here on my end. When I saw the surgeon he said that was the only thing we have not tried do worth a go.

Thing is....the pain is better now....but still "there" in the background. I fear when I start getting real IM volume into gear, it won't hold.

@Mary, did you have to basically rest and do nothing between sessions? They have me booked in 3 consecutive weeks at end of April. Not sure if that means 3 weeks no training...no walking...nothing....or just take it easy.
  • ...one last one for Mary, how many sessions did you have before it worked?

    Thanks!!
  • @Dawn, I had seven sessions. And, I continued to train thru them. I had a good chat with Coach Patrick. He offered lots of good ideas on how to ease the tension during the day (standing work desk), etc. I would walk hills and run flats. I was careful when riding but continued to ride hills and distance (Lake Placid is a hilly course). Once I started the treatments I felt better about getting to the finish line. Even if I had to walk the hills, there weren't that many. And, the treatments while painful worked. My ART chiro said after the race that she was not optimistic about my ability to race before I started the treatments.
  • Mary, thanks for that...starting to feel optimistic about this now. Let's hope I get the same results as you did...first appointment is in a couple weeks.
