Hamstring strain with race this weekend

So on Sunday I woke up and my hamstring felt a little tight but I really didn't think much of it so I did my ride anyway. It was not an intense ride being that I have a Half Ironman this weekend. Since then I've had this very SLIGHT pain in my hamstring and I've taking Mon/Tues completly off, plus added a message on Monday. It is not really painful and really only notice it when I go up and down stairs.

The Delima - I have a "B" race this weekend (half Ironman) and I'm debating on racing. I don't really feel as though it will hurt me during the race but I'm just afraid of doing damage to it. I don't want to race if it's going to set me back a couple weeks afterwards becuase I'll need to switch my focus to my Ironman after the race.

Just thought I would see what the house thought and if I should race or sit this one out?

Thanks guys!

  • Do you have access to a PT? If so I would see if you could get seen asap to see what is up.

    Good luck

  • I just made an appt for tomorrow to see one! I know that it is at the most a level 1 strain and it might not even be that.
    Thanks Steven!
  • Will second Steve on this one, definitely get it dug out. With the race this weekend you really don't have a lot of time to let it heal through rest and easy exercise. image

That being said, post massage- gentle stretching and ice that night. You want to absorb that new mobility and prevent any further inflammation. foam roll/stick to maintain for the remainder of the week. always ice 10-15 min after.

what's your game plan for the rest of the week workout wise??

  • I don't have a plan workout wise. I'm kinda scared to do anything because I think I need the rest to try and get this thing to heal. I'm going to swim tonight just to do something, then probably hit the stick on my hamy for a while. Probably won't even test my legs until race day (if I race) other than being in the pool. Is this a bad idea?
    Thanks Leigh!
  • @ Chad- you might find total rest will either do the trick or let things stiffen up. if it were me, I would be thinking about easy biking (nothing greater than z3/tempo for short intervals; nothing near or above FTP) and some deep water pool running?? that way I can guage how the leg feels without risking further injury. If those kinds of activities are uncomfortable or leaving you sore/achy at night...then it might be time to think about dropping the race and getting some full treatment.

    keep us posted! image

  • I went for a jog yesterday and then went to visit with PT in the evening. Using mostly ART, we finally pin pointed where the pain is coming from and he worked/stretched and dug that spot for a while. My leg feels really good today so I'm going to give it a go tomorrow. If my pain gets above a 3 (out of 10) then I'm pulling the plug but until then I'm racing. Thanks for all the help Leigh and Steven!
  • no problem. good luck this weekend! image
