Frameless Sunglasses

I've got the P3 currently set up with a 13cm drop and am determined to adapt to it, and maybe go a tick lower across the summer. My current sunglasses are kinda no-go at this drop, alas, though they are a perfect match for the EN kit . Just killing my neck

So what sunglasses are the pointy end, aggressive drop peeps rockin' these days?

  • I stopped using glasses altogether and just use the shield from the helmet for this very reason.
  • Any version of Smith Pivlock.  I wouldn't be caught dead on the beach with them, but they're amazing to wear while cycling.  You have 100% field of vision coverage (no gap, no frame to be seen) and extend high enough above the eye that you can get really aero and still see.  Plus, easy-to-swap lenses, comfy, and usually pretty cheap on sale somewhere. http://www.smithoptics.com

FWIW, I have the Pivlock V2 Max version.
  • I've read that shields (like the one on my Giro) are LESS aero than sunglasses. And, my eyes water much more with a shield than with sunglasses. I still use Smith Pivlocks - big lens, no frame, multiple shades included.

  • Sigh, I covet the Smith Pivlock but they are just too wide for my face.

I'm not the pointy end, but I am a bit of a sunglass slut. So I feel qualified to provide some input here!

I had a pair of the Rudy Project glasses but they broke in under 3 years with normal wear and tear- I'd consider those a bad design as I'm personally REALLY picky about keeping good care of my sunnies

I'm currently really happy with my Tifosi Podium glasses. I have several lenses including the fototec (which are great for those days when you start or end your ride in the dark or days when the clouds come and go) as well as the Clarion which is supposed to repel sweat and water (although I can't confirm it does so any better than any other lens). Nice thing about the Tifosi glasses is they aren't quite as pricey as others, so you don't feel as bad leaving them in transition.
  • I already dig this thread. My rudy's are 4 years old and I could use a new pair. I'm starting to look like LeMond out there.
  • I use the Pete Noyes approach and just use the shield from my helmet.......broken/lost too many pairs of sunglasses.....
  • Don't trust your lying eyes. Lower the blast shield and reach out with your mind. Use the Force.
  • Alas, if I want to read my computer while aero, I am stuck with having the "cheaters". http://www.xx2i.com/collections/sport-readers
  • Thanks all! I picked up a pair of the Smith Pivlock Arena's, in red with platinum(?) lenses.

Joe, I don't think I'm far behind you with the reading glasses

  • Smith Pivlocks!!
  • Tifosi Podium, absolutely. Comes with different colored lenses and if you scrape you lenses, buy new ones for $19. Can't beat the price and they are perfect on bike and run.
  • I have a set of smith optics shades and a set of oakleys. Personally I like the oakleys better...they both look and feel better to me. On both sets of shades I use polarized lenses. I really like them. I also have clear lenses for nighttime and high-contrast yellow lenses for really bad overcast. I've used the yellow "shooter glasses" for 2 really bad weather half marathons and the race pics are hilarious.
  • X2 for Tifosi Podiums. I gave up on buying expensive sunglasses once I had kids. They love to play with sunglasses. My daughter stood on my $200+ Oakleys. When the Tifosi broke after a couple seasons, just bought another pair.
  • One other thought, when I took my P2 to Jim @ ERO, he said a drop beyond 10cm might make it hard to digest food. I had my bike setup at a 12cm drop. He said that was too much and set it up at 10cm.

I'm sure you've tested this configuration before, just thought I'd share...
  • Tifosi has been working really good for me. Smith's look cool though.
  • I also have a pair of rimless Tifosi Fototecs. The quality of the optics is not as good as Smith's. Also, lens size is smaller. So they were relegated to casual use, until my wife - to whom I'd loaned them for our recent two week vacation - broke them in half on the red-eye home. Doubt I'll replace them.

Yeah, I can see that. I used to ride it like this all the time. I'll give it shot and see how it goes, will make an appt with Jim to have him check me out.

  • While I know, according to various tunnel tests, that the helmet with visor is LESS aerodynamic, it cannot outweigh the lack of head-squeezing from the earpieces of the glasses and field of vision benefits of racing with the visor (I have both a clear and a shaded/grey one). I switched a few years back and have no plan of going back.

I put sunglasses on in T2, which are stored in my "go bag".
