FL 70.3 race week

Hey all,

Race week is here. Hope everyone is (getting) excited. Be careful this week, don't get hurt right before the race. Everyone has worked super hard to get to this point, the fitness is there, now we just need to show up as healthy and as rested as possible and bring home the team championship trophy!!

Saturday: Early dinner at Olive Garden at 4:30pm. Address is 405 Cypress Gardens Blvd, Winter Haven, FL.

Also on Saturday, the swim course is open from 11-1 if anyone wants to check out the murky waters. Melissa and I will probably swim the first half of the 'M'.

Athlete Guide is here with weekend schedule and all info you need http://www.ironman.com/~/media/6b671830d6af4914a9e066b5d22855e2/2015 70 3 florida athlete guide 3 27.pdf

Weather: Looks like its going to be hot with forecasted 92 deg high on Sunday. Looking at the upcoming days it looks like it is high 70's to low 80s in the late morning , early afternoon hours. Be ready for some heat.

Have a safe week and see you all on Saturday.

  • Yeah...race week! I ran 52 miles this past week thanks to my trip to DC. Swim volume was down to 10,500 yds and biking only 100 miles since I was away. Leaving for TN tomorrow so will probably take Tue as my off day. Ate too much today but it was soooo good.
  • Hey guys - afraid I'm likely to miss the OG dinner now due to some family commitments in Tampa.
Is there a decent place we can rendezvous on the morning when T closes?
I know some of us have quite a while between then and our swim starts.

    Stay safe this week!
  • 3000 yards swim plus 20 miles on the drainer this morning including 3x10 mins Z4. At the airport now so that will be it for swimming and biking until Thursday evening.

Can't meet race morning since I am wave 2 and will be all twitterpated.
  • Swam the prescribed workout this morning. Plan to visit the therapist today for some underwater running.

I'm also in wave 2 so I'll be getting things set up and then a little warmup. Paul and I right next to each other in the bike racks (213, 215) so swing by and say hi early.
  • Hopefully will catch everyone in Transition at least during morning setup ...

Quick run in today and will either swim or bike tonight.
Knocking out the last few maintenance wko's over next 3 days before travel on Thursday.

Mr. FedEx picked up the bike this morning too so fingers crossed all arrives safely in 1 piece!
  • Hey gang - stupid question perhaps but just got the "invite" for the TriClub area.

Assume we're not setting up a formal tent or anything since just the few of us, but wondering if worth it to get a wristband for the Mrs. and kids?
Sounds like a cool place to hang out and have some food & drinks while waiting along the course.

It must be open for family/friends spectating right ? Or am I missing something ?

    Thanks,
    djd
  • David, I got the invite but don't really understand what it is and why this the only race that has it. Plus, I don't know how far from the finish it is. I'm doing this race without my Sherpa so will probably drive home not too long after I'm done.

  • David , the tri club area is set up near the finish line but along the path where we will be running by 3x. Great spot. There is room along that same path that is not in the tri club area , was very packed last year. It's a fun part of the run. Not sure if it is for everyone or just athletes
  • Thanks David and Tom for submitting your bio's to Brenda. I totally forgot .

Swam 1700 yds yesterday, did a 2.5 mile run this morning ( approx 2.5 miles, the treadmills were all taken so I had no watch and gps to track my paces so its a rough estimate). Got on the bike for 4 x 8' zn3 but got off after the third set. Wasn't feeling it today.

  • Light swim last night and bike this morning.
Running from lunch today then final 2 wkos tomorrow before Thursday travel.

Re the TriClub ... see below email chain ... sounds like well worth the $5 and a nice perk of being associated with a club if you have some family/friends coming to support.

    Hi David!

No worries at all. : ) That is so great that your family is coming to cheer you on.

Yes, they can all hang out in the TriClub Village. If they would like food, they will need to purchase the food wrist band for $5.00 each. Beer, hard cider, water and lemonade are provided. They will also need a wrist band to get in the Triclub Village but we will get you set up with those.

I will set aside 5 wristbands for you.

Let me know if I can help with anything else.

Hi guys - can you clarify a couple aspects of this?

I'm coming down with a few others from the Endurance Nation team + my wife, brother, and 2 girls (age 4 and 8 months) in our cheering squad.

Can the family join us in the triclub area?
And I just need to ensure I buy wristbands for them at the expo?

    Perhaps I'm over thinking it!

    Thanks
  • Off day for me in exciting Tullahoma, TN.
  • Can't seem to be able to get a picture up for the bio. Oh well. Did bike and super easy slow run today. Plan to do some more underwater running tomorrow or Thursday for my hip tendinitis.

The TRI club area sounds nice . I'm assuming we can buy the wrist bands for family at check in. I think my wife would like it.

    Packed the bike up today.
  • Hey Tom - from the mail I got back from Karen I believe you need to do 2 things.
    1) RSVP now via the evite as somewhere it did say limited to first 450 people. Maybe they won't run out but just to be safe.
    2) buy extra "food&drink" band for 5 bucks each at the expo

  • Thanks David. I did RSVP so will look to buy the wrist band at the expo.
  • Anyone know what the water temp will be? I'm assuming it will be non-wetsuit.
  • I figure probably not but will double check at registration.
Wetsuit is packed just in case!
  • Keep an eye on the facebook page. There are others asking about the water temp. I assume someone from the race organization will provide an update as we get closer to Sunday. https://www.facebook.com/Ironman703Florida . Last year was wetsuit legal, but they had a cold front come in the week prior to the race. This year has been hot here.

  • Tom Z, the RD, has posted morning water temps on ST. Up to 74 two days ago. Unlikely but it will be close.

5 mile run in Tullahoma this morning. At Nashville airport hoping to get home tonight.
  • Congrats to everyone on your race yesterday. Hopefully everyone is starting is recovering well and is hydrated again. It was incredibly hot on the run.

It was great to meet everyone. Paul, David and Tom, I wish you the best of luck for the remainder of the season. You all have big events coming up. I'll be tracking you guys as Melissa and I figure out the rest of our season.

Melissa and I didn't stick around long after the race. We had family there who had been baking in the sun all morning so we got lunch somewhere in Haines City. Did anyone stay around for the awards? How did EN do in the tri-club competition?

  • I left about an hour after I limped in. I always feel bad for the people with flats or mechanicals and at this race it was my turn. I flatted on a rough corner just after 5 miles into the bike. The rear tire, of course. Changed it, grabbed the CO2 and then discovered I didn't have an adapter with me. I lost one a month ago and forgot to move my spare from my other tri-bike. Turns out that was good luck because I would have just blown the spare tube since I had a seating problem with the tire and it would have just pinched flat again. But I didn't know that and remounted the wheel hoping someone would have mercy on my worthlessness and lend me an adapter. Lucky me, tech support rolled by in just a few minutes, but the mechanic noticed right away that the tire bead was not holding. I'm not in any hurry cause my competitive race is over, and I am finally on my way after a 20 min stop. I'm thinking of just taking it easy on the bike, then after a couple of miles, my adrenaline got the better of me and I pushed the pace up and finished the bike in 2:34 net. Not smart. I was pushing fluids in the high humidity going through the fog, but could feel the energy draining out of my legs by 8 miles into the run. Slower and slower...then walking as Jan flies by...eventually hanging on to a mailbox for several minutes at 12.5 miles as my calf cramped and then my thigh. Definitely not my day, but if you are going to have a bad one, it's great to pick one that didn't really matter. Many congrats to Jan, Melissa, David, and Tom for pulling off great times during the incredibly hot run.
  • Paul, bummer about the flat. I was wondering what happened. I didn't stick around long either since my wife had also been in the hot sun all morning. It was nice to finally put faces to names. Thanks Jan for being our race captain.

My race went well with the exception of my hip. Pain got worse through the whole run and woke up this morning with a huge bruise over my hip. Always have what if's at the end of each race which is one of the reasons we keep at it!
