Can I use 11-speed chainrings with a 10-speed setup?

I want to covert to 11-speed DI2 but it may take a bit of time. In the meantime, can I buy the chainrings (because I need to do that now) and use it with my 10-speed setup for a while. I realize the 11-speed chain is narrower so not sure if this will work.

  • Ten speed rings work fine with eleven speed chain. Husband converted his bike to eleven speed and kept his ten speed chain rings and he says it's flawless
  • Thanks Bridget. I was actually asking the opposite question...can I use 11-speed rings with the 10-speed drivetrain setup?
  • I don't believe it will work, and if it does it likely won't work well.

10 speed rings with 11 sped chain works as the interior dimensions of the chain are the same and it's the outer width that is smaller.  11 speed specific crank sets have a smaller distance laterally between the rings so the wider 10 speed chain will likely cause front shifting issues.

  • Yeah, that's what I figured. I need to spend less time on line because over the course of this morning I seem to have convinced myself to spent a sh*tton of cash going to 11-speed. The thing that I think will seal the deal is that my current levers are already ST-9071 so (I think) compatible with a new setup (saves >$400). The other thing I want is 2-button bar-end shifters (SW-R671) so I can shift the FD from the bar ends...my existing setup only controls the RD from the bar-ends. Now I just need to figure out if I can go with the internal battery SM-BTR2 with my BMC TM01 frame. It seems some people have done this..........

Time to go for a run when my wife gets home in a few minutes. Maybe I'll clear my head and come to my senses............
  • I went through the same thing....you can go with the BTR2...I did the same thing on my P5 which previously required removal of the rear wheel to remove and change the battery. Now I just charge via the USB cable. Where is the BTR1 mounted? If it's not near the location you would mount the BTR1 you may need a longer etube wire.

  • Oh...and you may also need the 5 port junction box to accommodate the bar end and bullhorn shifters if you only have a 3 port currently.
