Amy's injury question - race next weekend

Hi coach Patrick

On my Sunday run about 2 miles in I experienced a sharp pain in  my left achilles (I wasn't even pushing it !).  I walked for about a 1/2 mile and jogged the other mile home without much discomfort.  I have been wearing my night splint (h/o plantar fasciitis) and icing.  I decided no running until the race.  Yesterday (Mon.) I had off per my plan.  I was suppose to bike and run today.  I rode the bike on the indoor trainer and tried to not push too hard.  Felt ok until the end (45 min.) it started to ache a bit and didn't feel great unclipping from the pedals. Pretty achy the rest of the day.  Unsure what to do about Sun. race.  Wearing the night splint it has felt ok in the morning but a little achy off/on during the day. How should I judge if I should race.  Thanks for your help.    Amy Wray

  • Bummer!! I say that you stay off it until Friday when undo a test run to see what you think.

In the meantime head over to www.athletestreatingathletes.com and find some self care foam rolling you can do to get the recovery process on the fast track.
  • Thanks for the advice
  • Hi Coach Patrick,
Thanks for asking! I finished ? Friday I went to a massage therapist. Not sure if it helped for the race but I think we figured out it is more a calf problem than achilles. All a bit connected but happier to think it's more muscular. It was pretty windy all weekend. It made for a challenging choppy swim. What a confidence booster though. My goal originally for the race was to go easier on the bike in hopes I could put together a solid run. I struggle a lot with my run - much of it I think is mental. The bike was windy but happy with my av. speed without feeling like I worked hard - those intervals are working. My calf/achilles felt OK on the bike and until about two miles into the run. I did a run/walk for the rest. I think my IT bands bothered me more than my calf. Not exactly the race I had hoped for but really happy I was able to finish. Thanks for caring. I hope you have a fantastic IM Texas. Amy
  • IT Bands...Calf...sounds like you have a lot of "body homework" to catch up on to match our season. It can be done...just need to work it into your regular schedule, etc...let me know if you need help with that!
  • You are right! I'm always a work in progress. Athletestreatingathletes.com is a great site. Thanks. Hope you had a good weekend of biking. Amy
