New 5K PR despite hitting car last week

Had an extreme huge surprise on a 5k run test this morning.  As many may know last week I hit a car biking and got banged up pretty good and haven't did anything since to let the body mend and heel up a little, but last night I tested how I felt with a little easy bike and very easy run.  All felt pretty good as most pain is just located in the back and neck from the crash.  So today in my plan leading into the up coming IMLP training was a 5K run test.  I thought what the heck i haven't tested in what seems like forever and have had 2 week transition and then just general prep since, so no real IP intervals at all and didn't know where to keep my paces for the up coming training.

I decided to just go out in the first 1/2 mile and just get myself to that really uncomfortable place and just hold it there. (It's only 15 more minutes right)  Ended with a huge surprise of a 17:22 run and all 3 miles where within 1 second of each other.  The best paced run I've ever even come close to espacially in a 5k as I usually go out way to hard.  Nice to know I still have the speed and to that these workouts although not working on IP pace stuff still keeps you right there as this was a 4 second PR but will take it under the circumstances.

Keep on Working everyone this stuff is for real and keeps working on us old timers even.

  • Geeeeeze, will nothing slow you down? Are you sure they didn't slip you some extra juice during all that Chemo? Hey- did you go to the same doc as Lance?

Seriously, congrats man! That's just awesome!
  • Dude! That is smokin'. Hello Sub-17:00. Impressive on many levels. Not just the fact that you were hit by a car last week but that you did it solo! Nice work!

  • I call this a 'TT', Typical Trent.  Put a drill bit through my leg, new FTP, got run off the road doing mile repeats, fastest min/mile yet, was a human missile into a car, PR'd my 5k.

Can't wait for the tragic story before Lake Placid.  Was driving down the road and my car exploded, I escaped with minor burns.  Qualified for Kona one week later.

Keep up the good work, drillbit.

  • Awesome as usual Trent. 17:22 solo is really impressive and keep in mind once you get around the 17 minute mark I believe 4 second are worth about a third of a vdot point. I really did not want to run another 5k this year but I may have because you are going to end up breaking 17 soon.

Are you running a marathon any time soon or can I at least be know that my PR there is safe for a little while ;-)

Seriously though, thanks for the motivation!
  • Damn man. Smoking time. Hopefully I can join you sub 20:00 guys soon.
  • Trent,

Another outstanding effort.  It seem that the time off was good for you.  Next time just take a holiday.

  • Awesome, Trent! And I think you are the first person ever I've seen scare mancona into doing a 5k to defend his honor.
  • if getting hit by a car can make you run that fast then let me put a paper bag on my head and walk around the street.

    Great Job

  • Damn Trent, just damn.
  • Are you f#cking kidding me? You are an absolute beast. Next thing you will tell us that on your next FTP you are gonna go up 25w! I don't know what you are eating and drinking but I want some of it! Congrats.
  • Drillbit, you are THE MAN!!! Flippin' incredible. And very great to hear!

PS--also glad you are on the mend, um, to day the least. image

  • Geez, thats awesome. I had a new PR on my 5k test today also, but not quite that fast... Great job.
  • Sweet action Trent - man it's tough "keeping up with the Jones's" up in here...!! image
  • Holy crap! That's amazing! Big congrats on running that fast, that hard by yourself after that accident.
  • I think part of you melded with that car to forge a new super human machine. Crazy. You leaving T2 at LP is going to sound like a rocket taking off. image
  • That's it, I'm about to go ride my bike in heavy traffic in hopes of duplicating your efforts bro!

Congrats and glad to hear you're recovering smoothly.
  • Ladies and Gents,

Thanks for the kind words...at least I think they were in kindness.  My intent was not to toot my own horn (although proud of the personal accomplishment) but was to show to everyone that just continuing to do the work prescribed gets the job done and staying consistent with the EN training like I've tried really pays off.

Trust me I'm not really all that fast of a dude.  I occasionally will go run with a running club in Fort Wayne for track or speed work days to just drill myself, but there are at least 10 guys up there that just smoke me on all workouts and they consistently run between 15 min. to 17min. 5k's.  Thems the fast boys.

Hey- did you go to the same doc as Lance?

I think he had the same Dr's as Steve Austin

Great job out there and way to recover!

  • Trent,
Take a framing hammer and smash your cheekbone in just before your next ft test. image
