If "you are what you eat", then I am a jar of Super Crunch, Skippy, Peanut Butter! What would the rest of you ladies be? Truthfully now...

Barb, I would be a big piece of well-marbled beef with luscious gravy. Yep, all full of saturated animal fat and cholesterol!

I'm crawling out the holiday indulgences hole too. I've replaced all white carbs with roasted green bean (sooo yummy, but I'm now a fart bomb) and roasted squash. Also, I took Michele's advise (on a thread earlier in the year about weight loss) and begin every dinner with a salad. As for sweets/desserts, I've called upon my inner food snob/gourmand and told myself that it's not worth eating unless it's utterly exquisite or from Paris.

  • 1.5 days with no sweets. Fruit and carrots instead. Day 3 is always the tough one.

  • Day three: Day One (monday) and today I had the most fatiguing albeit short bike rides, even though the weather was sunny with blue skies. I couldn't wait to get to my car!! I don't feel undernourished and in fact feel very bloated or full due to probably extra fruit! lol... I just have to laugh.....there it was high 40's and I rode just 45', completely whooped and although not bonky (I had just had lunch)... I rode off into the grass on my tri bike when looking at four people on horses up ahead!! I veered as if I were going to go with them!! the effects of sugar withdrawal/??!! had I been taking my synthroid? and then son told me to stop in at Subway to buy him some food and I drove right by it and in fact didn't remember exactly which shopping center it was in!! tired, I went to the nail place to get my nails done!!! as my two broken nails from the dog/me wreck were about to get pulled off accidentally in gloves and that would hurt! there I sat about to lay my head down on her desk.... I only had 2 cups of coffee today maybe caffeine was needed, I had eaten lunch of salad and ham and bean soup with my mother so I shoulda had calories,, but in a dazed stupor, I watched Dr. Oz on TV.. and since I never watch TV, I watched with interest on three women of Detroit determined to wear a bikini in 100 days.... and they weighed them and told them their BMI and showed them some exercises and eating protocol. Why I had never seen this guy but the audience was full of women and he had all sorts of health tips so I checked out his website and lo and behold came across this: http://www.doctoroz.com/challenge/sugar-detox. And he quotes the effects of sugar on the brain are like morphine! now like I said, I really wasn't consuming sugar all the time but that late afternoon school bus gets home 3 p.m. lull is a real thing! I have come home to microwave some mussels full of protein and iron and in the frozen section at grocery store, and also had some whole grain bread with cream cheese, out of regular cheese and some hot tea. My "big" jeans are busting at the waist due to increased fiber and thus it goes with the "no sugar" fasting! the prayer is going a lot better!!

*I saw this guy years ago and he is funny so on a whim I found him in YouTube and sure enough there is this one on food!!  now he is from the South and well, we were giggling!  Mark Lowry

  • Wow Marianne! You had a dangerous day! Who knew sugar withdrawl was like morphine?? I have seen Dr. Oz on t.v. before. He is quite interesting. I hope you have a better day! Way to keep on keepin' on! Linda, good job! Keep it up! Kitima, love the analogy of the well-marbeled beef with lucious gravy! LOL! image
Thanks for the support and sharing comments! I did better yesterday, avoiding sugary treats, surviving the run intervals, and even followed up with weight training! Now, to keep it going, and hit the bike 30/30's today!
The Women of the Haus all rock! Great support and incentive all the way around!
I am doing IMKY, but I tell you, I am going to see if I can volunteer for IMWI, as I have to support the EN Cowgirls at IMWI!!!
  • Hi, I'm Donna,

I have the same kind of problems, almost impossible to lose weight and hungry all the time.  I've got about 20-30 lbs to lose but can't hardly drop a pound- BUT, before Christmas I was eating a bit more, really focusing on protein and fat at each meal and my weight was dropping, so I'm going back to that. Eggs, almonds, avocados, chicken, fish, fruit, salads, oatmeal

A couple of things that help me out are the Fiber One Oat and Choc  bars - I usually eat one around 9-10 in the morning and it keeps me full.  Over the holidays, I cut it up in pieces and ate it instead of cookies. Don't eat more than one a day or you will blow up like a big balloon.  That and cutie oranges -  I eat those in the afternoon

Dining out kills me, it just has too much hidden calories and don't even get me started about wine.  I can't seem to make it through the winter nights without it.

Most of my problems are caused by sitting motionless behind a desk and a long commute. I bet I don't walk 500 steps all day.

Oh, and I am of a certain age....

    Donna

  • welcome Donna!! wow only 500 steps that has gotta be tough! good job Barb. yes I am continuing and was tired again yesterday!! rest day today and went to store and bought a bunch of fruit, veggies, and lean meat which was exciting!! you know, when you see good looking fruit like blueberries, blackberries that are sweet!! I saw the carrots Linda and just had to pass on them, makes me feel like I am on a diet!! yes please volunteer at IMWI, would be great or come to the summer camp.
  • Day 3 done with no sweets. Onto day 4. Not one pound lost.

  • Welcome Donna!! So nice to have another Chica on board. I think winters are tougher on many of us when it comes to resisting food temptations. Somehow those long dark nights just make me want to turn into a hibernating bear!

Marianne & Linda- your sugar fast pact has helped me say no a few times recently to those temptations. Even if I'm not officially in the pact- it's helping!

Barbara- FWIW I went to IMLou last year to be an EN Sherpa and had a total blast! It was pretty cool to go to a race and be able to enjoy all of it without the worry of doing the race on Sunday. It was also more tiring than I expected and gave me a greater appreciation for what my husband puts up with on race day too. We would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have you there to cheer us on!
  • This is Day five of the no sugar and come to found out thru local talk and here, many others decided to give it a whirl. one small observation... I have bonked/been tired every day and realized that I probably needed to eat a few more cals. duh. well if I was eating with the same frequency but duh sugar has more ## then duh, I would be bonking about 3 p.m.!! and duh maybe not have so much energy for workouts... a mental tally revealed yesterday by 3 p.m. I had 1,000 calories! I know shoot me... so gonna do a more Dan Socie approach and eat more ## early than dinner. very hard as I don't wake up hungry at all. and can't stomach eggs before running and out the door with school stuff and coffee and a banana in the car and then after run calories and then mid morning, then lunch and then it was the AFTERNOON ..... okay so an interesting look at myself and how I work!! enough drivel.... I am only on day five and haven't hit my brownie 1x month fix yet! it is coming and will let you know how I avoid that.. but right now I have eaten fruit with yogurt, nuts that I haven't dallied with in years like Brazil nuts,, cheese and more tangerines! and to be honest getting organized to also fix all of my foods when I am not hungry when I wake up, well just gotta do a bit better, so this morning? coffee, drive to school, still nothing (shoot me again!) then some blueberries after walking the dog.... 9 a.m. Cottage cheese with pineapple, (in docs's office with husband for his inner ear problem) and then tangerine in car.... so by noon?? you can see when I came home, I was hungry, a cheese sandwich and yogurt with fruit.... so I can still see that I haven't eaten enough! still not hungry right now... and not going to eat Chocolate Teddy Grahams or other small munchies while I do housework.... I have no desire for a chicken breast! lol.... and why do I tell you all of this? to say that I am just betting that at the end of 21 days, I hope to have reworked myself... I had my bonking pegged where I didn't do it, and now just need to readjust!! Spiritually, I have had a great week. Things have happened in my personal life that have been "small miracles" stuff I didn't actually ask for by name but definitely desirable. Carving out time for prayer doesn't inhibit the process just allows it to happen, sort of like setting a time to go workout!! I have enjoyed prayer but this week have allowed more time for it and let it ebb and flow a bit more. I have made and continue to make many mistakes but it always amazes me the spiritual forces that I bet we don't tap into enough!! "food for thought".... smile. love to all of us and kudos goes out to the women losing weight! you go girl!! don't despair! m
  • Ooops. Goofing around with my son in the kitchen and a powdered donut went down! I completely forgot until after I "et" it. Back on the wagon. It was good with teh cup o' tea. Oh well.

  •  Oh Linda- Bummer, happens to the best of us. get right back on it.. I did have a honeynut roll thing that I shouldn't have yesterday. Don't even know why

You guys were all with me this am as I went to store to pickup oatmeal and coffee & LOL FF 1/2 & 1/2 ( I know not good, but like it in my coffee). Forgot to get it the other night. Anyway, walking through store, i was repeating what I was there for and nothing else. You guys were in the store with me keeping me away from the bad stuff so thanks

Tomorrow plan to cook up a minetrone with quinoa from clean eating mag, also from same mag a shepppards pie with turkey, and a squah casserole with chicken

    Welcome Donna

I have tried those Fiber-one bars, pretty good. help with that sweet tooth

The other thing I have/use although inconsistent is my body Bugg. It is the black armband they wear on biggest Loser. It measures calories you burn with multiple sensors. Also counts steps. You in put calories. Right now having a problem linking my bugg to website ( having computer issues last few days).  When I wear it, I find I am much better about what I eat because I will be entering my food. keeps me accountable. You can find more info at myapexnutrition.com or search body bugg

Welcome Donna!  I hear you on the wine thing  I just think I am protecting my heart, cause its red wine that I like I am also of that age- erratic. Seems every 3 weeks, Again? Seriously... then you think you are done, and a few days later- nope, i'm back . One of the women I work with is my age (45) and having similar issues. We are now perimenopause partners (PMP)

    Marianne- video was great, LOL.

  • Welcome Donna! It's a good thing you're training for a triathlon with that job of yours---can't imagine sitting for that long!

Linda: I feel you pain, chica! I started that Weigh In/weight spreadsheet thingy in Nov...After 10 solid days of no butter on my bagel, no sugar in my tea, no sweets, no fried food, no food after 7pm, I lost a whopping 0.4 lbs. I almost burst into tears on the scale. Since then, I've stopped weighing myself daily---it's too psychologically crippling for me. I've also started taking the dog for long hikes (afterall, I'm not really running yet). It seems to be helping so far.

You gals were all with me today: I was going to have chocolate cake for lunch (one of my staff made it; and it's exquisite!). Instead, I put down the knife and stepped away from the cake. Had soup and salad instead. One small victory...

Maam, {{{{ Step Away from the chocolate cake, and put your hands up}}}}}} hehe Good job Kitima!

  • You girls crack me up! Linda, I hate when that happens! LOL! Some animal crackers jumped into my mouth last night! LOL! Seriously though, good job everyone! I am so glad I vented, as we are all supporting each other in ways we don't even know! Kitima, good job just backing away from the cake! Who knew there were Cake Police??
Seriously though, just knowing there are other ladies out there going through the same thing as me, has helped me to make better choices throughout my day. It's kind of like an accountability thing. We don't have to be accountable to each other. But, the supportive vibe from each other, has helped us to be accountable to ourselves. Does that make sense? Seriously, it is helping me find my path back to clean, lean, and green. I'm not quite there yet, but I am making better choices. I looked at chocolate last night at the store, put it down, and decided on animal crax. I shouldn't have gotten those either, but I had to have something sweet, so I chose those. (It's that time...need I say more??) I am in a spot right now, that I am starting to feel panicked, as I MUST lose atleast 25 more lbs. before my IM in August, as I cannot see going through a long day like that with all this weight on me. I am 45 lbs. overweight yet, even with the big weight loss I've had. And, if I lose this weight, I will be faster than I've been in probably 20 years!!!!! WoooHOOOOO!!!
  • Here's something else that I'm doing - and it is totally, totally wacko.  I'm sure we've all seen Julie and Julia, well, I've decided to do the same thing. But instead of Julia Child, I've decided to channel Natasha Badmann.  I go thru the day saying, what would Natasha do? Would Natasha do her workout, hell yes!  Would Natasha eat that cake, hell NO! What would Natasha's skinny self eat?  Would Natasha lay on the couch watching American Idol and drinking wine ( yes, she would!)  but she does her 100 pushup program during the commericals. It takes away the internal frustration, guilt, anxiety that I seem to have about trying to lose weight and puts it on Natasha - she is strong enough to do it, I don't have to make the decisions, Natasha does.    All I have to do is be Natasha.

In Julie and Julia, the hubby says - Julia wasn't always Julia Childs.  Well Natasha started somewhere too, and just for today, I can be Natasha.  I am Natasha Badmann!

I know you are all shaking your  heads thinking what a nutcase -but it seems to be working.

  • I'm not thinking your a nutcase! Actually, I got a good chuckle out of the fact that Natasha would indeed, lay on the couch watching American Idol and drink wine!!! Of course! Hey the pros have to have some down time too!!! I love Natasha! I think I'd channel Chrissie Wellington. I belong to GO TRIBAL, which by the way, all you ladies should check out and join! It is an online Tri community for WOMEN! And Chrissie Wellington partners in it! There was even a ride with Chrissie in San Diego in October, which I couldn't go to, but wanted to! Check it out! Tanya is the woman who started it, and it's a fantastic group for supporting eacch other as well. I made a friend named Natasha Perez, who was asking training questions about the bike, for her race in MONACO!!! She lives in San Diego and did the 70.3 in Monaco. Great stuff, like EN!
It is 30 degrees out, here in NW Indiana today. Trying to decide if I do my bike outdoors, or run. I've been wanting to just run. No HR monitor, no intervals, just do 5 or 6 miles, and count it as my weekend run. Any thoughts??? I better go do my pnb on toast thing before I do anything though. Tummy is rumbling, and I better listen to it before I transition back into 'Sumo Woman' and hit the fridge at 60 mph!!!
  • Hi Ladies,
This is my first time posting here. My buddies Kitima and Dana have mentioned this forum, so here I am . I have a little in site that might help.
I am 52, menopausal, a personal trainer, currently fighting breast cancer and signed up to do my first IM Lake Placid. As far as weight gain, I have had to fight it all my life and most of my clients are middle age women with the same issues. One thing have have found helps a lot, not only with losing and maintaining weight loss is the Zone eating style by Bary Sears. It is not a diet, but a lifestyle of eating that works very well for an athlete. Reason being you are not just counting calories, you are balancing your Protein, Carbs and Fats. You learn how to balance each meal so you are satisfied, and have the energy for our workouts. I found you can loss weight counting calories, but you may get too many carbs, not enough fat or protein and that can lead to poor recovery, or getting hungry too soon. If you are interested, I suggest you get Mastering the Zone, by Barry Sears. Look for it at the library. It gives you a easy to understand explanation of how and why it works and a sample week menu and recipes. I have turned my husband and son (21) and many clients on to this. The menus are easy to follow and you will be amazed at the quantity of food. The reason for that is your vegetables now become the major portion of your carbs.

This leads to a second benefit. I have also have the night sweats and hot flashes. When I follow the Zone, (and cut out my caffeine, wine& sugar) the hot flashes are much less to almost none. Reason being, I eat very little, if any processed carbs, that is breads, pasta, cereals. And I can train find because I am still getting plenty of carbs, it is just in vegetable form. And by doing that, I eat a lot more volume of food.

On Progesterone cream. I have used it and some work and some do not. First of all, I was tested (a saliva test) for progesterone level and found to be low. The current cream I am using now was recommended by my health care practitioner. That, a long with everything else has worked fine.

I hope this helps. Barbara P
