Swimming Races

Hi all!

So I recently found out I have a stress fracture and cannot run for a while. I am trying to be positive and focus my energy on things I can do....which is swim! I would like to do a swim race or 2 this season since I have to withdrawal from a few of my tri events.

Looking for good swimming events in New England! A few I looked at so far are:  2 Bridges Swim- Hudson River, Charles River 1 mile- Boston.

Any feedback on these swims or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Any interest in doing tris as a relay? I could bike and my wife could run.... Let me know! Good luck!

  • Hi Laura......I read your post on the dashboard about your fracture and feel so bad for you. I am not a life long swimmer as well, but when I had a stress fracture in my foot about 5 years ago I started some deep water running. Of course it's not the same as running but it is a good workout and kept some of my run fitness. Good luck!

  • Laura,

    Check out this link
    http://rays-notebook.info/ows/home.html

ON that site there are a ton of links to open water swimming events all over the place.

I was very sorry to hear about the stress fracture. Was it related to the calf pain that you were having and had posted about the compartment syndrome?

Rest up and Heal up. The time off from running on it will be over before you know it.

  • Thank you SO much for the replies!!

@ Kim- Thank you for the links! and YES YES YES!! I would LOVE to do a relay!! What events were you thinkin?? That would be GREAT!

@ Peter- Thank you so much for your thoughts and I am def interested in learning how to water run.  I watched a few videos on you tube today but I am still a little unsure of how it will go.  Have any good links or info?

@ John- Thank you for the link! That def had a few swims that I am going to check out.  And yes- its why my calf was such a mess. apparently my muscle was trying to protect my bone which caused the pain in my calf.  The other pains are all related bc my gait was SO off because I have been running on a stress fracture. Ugh. But I am trying to stay positive. Trying to take this as a learning experience. Thanks again image

  • Two thoughts...

    1. Join a Masters team and train for a real-life SWIM MEET. If you aren't previously a competitive swimmer it would probably change the game you swim-wise.

    2. It isn't in NE but the Big Shoulders 5k swim in Chicago is a pretty big event that you could make an "A-race"
  • Take the time you need to and follow the doctors instructions....the fracture will take some time to be 100% but in the mean time you have a great attitude on it and if you can swim in the mean time do as much as you can absorb without straining anything else along the way. Look at it as a opportunity to work on whatever the doctor allows.
