Tenderness behind the knee?
Not pain but want to keep it from becoming pain. Where ham meets the back of knee and sort of wraps around to the front below knee cap. No swelling or loss of range of movement. Thoughts out there?
Thanks in advance.

Pes anserinus is where the tendons of three muscles insert at the tibia. Sartorius, gracilis and semi-tendonosis (1 of the hamstrings). So, foam rolling the hamstrings and stretching (especially if it feels like a tight medial hamstring to you) would be in order. Have you moved your bike saddle up/higher? Also, use of eliptical machines, running uphill or hard repeats and shoes like MTB, sketchers (these are the current rage to firm the butt and hammys by stressing the posterior chain during normal walking...they make me feel like my knee is going to slightly hyperextend) and Newtons can cause this area to flare up...along with the poplitieus mentioned below. Also, didn't you just blast a Weds nite ride? Hard efforts like that with really throwing down the hammer can also do the trick.
Also, people often get a full or tight feeling behind the knee that often gets haphazardly diagnosed as a baker's cyst often times. A muscle that helps stabilize the knee called the popliteus, I find, is often the culprit. The popliteus feels more like a tightness of the upper, inner calf and back of knee...usually. It acts up when the knee is irritated functionally BUT can be a contributing cause of meniscus problems if it isn't released. You can foam roll the back of the knee but that has limited quality of value and you have to be careful back there with pressure as there is a neurovascular bundle on the inferior posterior lateral aspect of the knee that serves tissues below. Active Release Technique providers can help and you can find them online on ART's website.
Neither of these typically wrap around to the "front below the knee" from a symptomatic picture so if the pain is primarily below the knee then it is a different structure BUT that doesn't normally fit with "tenderness behind the knee" in my experience either. This is why internet diagnosis/treatment is challenging but I figured it's 5:50 am and I have a full cup of coffee...why not give it a shot.
Hope this helps.

Many, many, thanks. The feeling of "slightly hyperextend" nails it. I think the back and forth between speedplays and look pedals, road bike and tt did it. I also think my seat may be a little high on the tt bike and the quadcentric hammerfest Wed didn't help. I just ran and it I knew it was there so didn't push it. Icing, stretching and getting some ART.
Really appreciate it.

nicely done at 5 am Dr. Vince!
Amazing what coffee can do.
