Patti's crucible...

also, my LT and FTP are a little different.  my FTP is about 157 (20 minute test) and my LT last time I tested was closer to 144...

this last race (NOLA 70.3) I maintained steady 120 W for the 2:58 with little variability and NP matched the average power (120 versus 121)

my run was steady and close to my usual at 2:11.  (my best half marathon in a half IM being 2:01)

  • Patti, I don't see your question here??? image
  • I had TP recording of bike at NOLA70.3 but I guess I didn't copy paste properly. Where do we send crucibles or do you want the training peaks file? I didn't see info on that in the WIKI...
Also do you all ever use LT in determining ranges for workouts? My LT is lower than my FTP
  • Patti, if you can paste the link to it like Juan did, I will take a look at it...we are in the process of moving the Crucible review to a new "level" of EN service this year, hence why you can't find it.

We don't usually use LT for workouts as true LT requires lab testing, frequent measurement, controlled diet for testing etc. Perhaps you mean Aerobic Threshold or Ventilatory Threshold? Where your breathing markedly changes? Give me some more info, thanks!
  • Here's the link!  thanks!

I do a true LT which is based on lactate production. It's measured every couple minutes using a ramp procedure on a bike using an SRM set up.  I could also do the mask protocol looking at CO2 versus O2 curves but that is on a treadmill (running) instead of a power set up.

we use my bike measurements on the SRM set up.

My 20 minute FTP is on my bike on a computrainer..  I only do the SRM set up on a yearly basis as I don't like getting stuck in the finger...but it is a true lactate measure so it takes into consideration renal and aerobic/anaerobic metabolism of acids.  we found one thing interesting on this and that is that I can tolerate being acidotic a long time!  more than normal... but my LT had decreased from last year.  Interesting... Actually, my FTP had dropped a little as well, even taking into consideration my change in powermeters and different means of calibrating as I was using computrainer not my bike to do testing.

so I'm trying to add in some WO at lower levels to stress that lower part of the system....... might have to do with the heat variable in Austin?  or my rides with Violet Crown a local roadie group, who do a lot of surging at the stop signs...

    (okay, I'm  a geek )

  • I don't know about the diet thing.... All I do is avoid heavy workout the day before, and hydrate well and do test in AM.... no alcohol of course...
  • coach, I figured it out!  based on your response to someone else's thread my FTP is 1.2 times my LT!  that makes sense   (LT of 140 and FTP of about 160)

Great job in TXIM!!!!  I heard it was tough conditions on the run!

  • Thanks so much...a hot one for sure! image
  • Patrick, I hadn't heard back from you regarding this weeks training but I think I answered my question myself.....  I was late getting my 20 minute test in on the bike so I did it this morning.  My average power went down to 159 from 165... I was tired!... so I'm thinking a lot of volume is not advised....and I'm going off to race Alcatraz this weekend anyway.

could we set up a phone call sometime next week or the week after?

I sent you a request for a phone meeting to discuss volume and intensity due to my work schedule and missing some long rides/runs.  thank goodness I am injury free.

  • Patti, sorry there were like 4 threads from you so I was confused! Yes I Can talk next week...My schedule is online here: http://meetme.so/patrickmccrann -- Please remember to include your phone number.

If you can't find a good time, just call me on Thursday as I am driving up to Lake Placid. Have a blast in Alcatraz...I'd shut it down the rest of this week so you are ready to go this weekend!!!
  • Here's the link! thanks!

Patrick, can you take a look at this? this is the link to my race in NOLA
  • Thanks, Patrick!

It is only a half iron man so I am also concerned about that initial elevation of heart rate. Hopefully I'll keep it under control for the Lake Placid race.

  • Placid will be key...it's really miles 2 to 7.5 on Lap One where you can cook yourself. After that it's a big descent (helps with HR) and then a flat section...plenty of info in the Master Racing Page here: http://members.endurancenation.us/Resources/MasterRacingPages/IronmanLakePlacid.aspx
