California Athletes: Ride a Stage of the ToC with Us!
I've had several athletes ask to ride with campers when the race is passing through their area. This is totally fine, you're welcome to join us for a day. You're only cost is $0.25 per scoop of Gatorade Endurance if you use my SAG vehicles (just kidding ).
A few notes:
- We've got some folks that want to join use for Stage 1 out of Sacramento. My plan is to ride the stage route from Sacramento to Davis, and then pack up the camp and drive to Nevada City. If you want to join us, plan to get yourself back from Davis to Sacramento, though there's a chance I could be able to have the cargo van give you a lift back to Sacramento. I have to shoot the van back to the airport to pick up Stephanie.
- San Jose: in the past local EN'ers have met up with us somewhere near Livermore, climbed Mine's Road with us, then gotten themselves back. My bailout is after the final KOM when I need to get everyone in the vans and on the road to Monterrey.
- Stage 4: we're riding down the coast from Monterrey to Ft Hunter Liggett. Don't really see how that would a stage for you to drop in on.
- Stage 5: Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita -- you're welcome to find us on the road and ride with us, but this is a one way trip for us, I can't get you back to your car.
- Mt Baldy Stage: this is probably the best opportunity. The easiest option, for me, is to have you drive yourself and stage your car on Baseline, near where Mountainorwhatever dumps onto Baseline. Then ride to the base of GMR in Glendora. I'll be able to tell you pretty accurately when we'll be at the corner of GMR and Sierra Madre and you just get yourself to that corner by that time. Ride up GMR with us, across the ridge to Baldy, up to the lifts, then descend with us down to your car. I'll have my vans staged in a parking lot somewhere and I need to hurry up and get them back to my place to box up bikes, etc.

Oh...one rule: no smack-talking the campers!
My folks will be likely be very worked, focused, and in no mood to entertain fresh, well rested athletes tagging in and jumping into the ride off the top rope wanting to mix it up
I am in for Saturday (Baldy). I have room for possibly 2 bikes, 1 for sure leaving from Long Beach. Let me know and we can carpool. Drive takes about 25 mins to Encanto Park but that would require us to ride back down GMR or down to baseline and play frogger back tot he car, approx 10 miles or so.
Details can be worked out later.
I'd for sure carpool with you, Chris!
No, it's the following Saturday, May 16th. Just to close the loop, my crew would be wheels up from my house at 8a and we'd be at the dirt parking lot / GMR TT start at 8:45-:50a.
FYI, we'll be doing an Official Unofficial ToC Time Trial up Glendora Mtn Road.
No, sorry. The Tour and our camp starts on the 10th so on the 9th I'm driving up to Sacramento with the vans and all of the bikes.
Next time you're in LA and have a layover, bring your cycling kit and get yourself up to the Pasadena area and we'll show you around . Joanne is a flight attendant for United, I bet you guys could swap some great stories!
David as of now I will be riding most of the ride Sat may 9th if you want to join me. PM me if interested.
