Stan's Macro Thread

I'm having trouble finding time in the weekdays to fit in the suggested workouts. I understand that you just do what you can. Generally, I can reliably make time for 45-60 min in the weekdays, but have much more flexibility over the weekends. With this restriction in mind, is it worth re-prioritizing my training schedule?

For example, I feel most comfortable with the swim, and rank that with lowest priority, keeping it 1x/week only. Not that I'm very fast, but I feel that trying to shave time off my swim isn't worth my time as much as the other areas. My run is probably my weakest; I try to run 2-3 times a week but would rather save a long run for Sunday. I try to bike 3 times a week with a long bike on Saturday and otherwise do 45-60 min on a bike trainer. Do you see any problems with this template if it is what i can make time for?

Sun: Long run  (couldn't find the web reference as to why it's preferred to bike both weekend days..)

Mon: rest day - i find this day off very helpful for recovery; i see no established days off in the EN plan

Tues: bike trainer 45-60 min

Wed: Run 45-60 min

Thu: bike trainer 45-60 min

Fri: Run AM / swim PM

Sat: Long bike

  • Stan....have you looked at the minimalist plans? Might be better suited to your time constraints.
  • Stan,
What training plan are you in right now?
  • HIM beginner 20 week plan (at week 7).

Sunday long run: please read this, been doing it this way since ~'04 or '05. It works. That said, this long run Thurs, two long bikes on the weekend thing is more important for IM vs HIM athletes, which is why I asked, so your schedule is fine, with the following notes:

    • Would be a bit better if you did the long run on Saturday vs Sunday. I'd rather have you do a long run on sorta fresh legs vs on Sunday after the Saturday long bike.
    • Would you be able to swim on the weekend after either of these workouts? Swimming 1x/wk is sorta a waste of time, frankly. If you're going to swim, I'd rather you swim at least 2x. And fine to swim minimal until ~4-5wks out from your race, but then I need you to try to get in the pool more often, hopefully following the schedule as-is.
  • Coach: Thanks for the feedback.

New question.. so I've been training for my first 70.3 (steelhead) and feel OK with my fitness level thus far at week 15 of 20.  I have been eyeing Racine 70.3 but have not signed up for it. Racine is 3 weeks ahead of Steelhead. My motivations to do it are: to increase my likelihood of finishing the 70.3 this summer and having a decent time, to help gauge where my fitness level is, to help prepare me for the "A" race so it can go better. I lean towards signing up but will listen if you think it is a bad idea ... also was hoping to get more specific instruction on how to do a taper if i have these 2 races to manage 3 weeks apart.

If you have the time and budget for it, racing Racine before Steelhead would be good, using Racine as a race rehearsal. Lots of information about inserting a race into a training plan here
