Another Garmin Barometer Story

Yesterday, while biking home from swimming, I gained 81,600'. This morning, on the first mile of my run, another 5000', then nothing after that. My Fenix 2 is celebrating its first birthday this week, with nearly 600 flawless event records since May 11, 2014.

But the altimeter reads +65616, and I can not recalibrate it. I called Garmin, a nice young lady answered within 3 rings. Ten minutes later, I was all signed up to receive a replacement watch next week. That's the good news. The bad? This is a problem which others on this forum and elsewhere have been experiencing with Garmin products. Here's hoping my next watch lasts longer, as I am using it for ALL training and outdoor activities. It's literally the only watch I wear, after years/ decades of a gizmo for every activity.

It will go out in a blaze of glory, as my back up PM, and data collecter for the Tour of California starting tomorrow.

  • Sounds like you'll be doing a lot more climbing than everyone else at the ToC!!!
  • Al, I'm on my seventh or eighth 910xt all with the same issue as yours! They have always been excellent about sending me a new one no charge but always the same problem usually a few months later. I think at this point when this one goes I'll just live without the altitude. Good luck with your new one!

  • turby - the 910 has a port for the altimeter that gets clogged with stuff which throws off the readings. It is on the silver part behind the "Mode" button. try cleaning that out with a safety pin or paper clip. It worked for me. Not sure about other models.
  • Thanks for the tip Jimmy. I'm on my second 910 and this problem just started again. I'll try cleaning it before calling Garmin again.
  • Thanks Jimmy! Will try it next time.

  • @ Jimmy - It worked and is still working! Thanks!
  • awesome! I don't know why garmin says nothing about this. There must be a reason.
  • I have had my 910 for almost three years and never had a problem. I must not sweat heavy enough.??
