New Googles

I am interested in purchasing some new googles. Is there a brand that anyone recommends? I have only had cheap pairs and I am ready for a nice pair that hopefully won't fog up. Any suggestions?

  • I have recently switched over to Roka goggles (from Aqua Sphere and TYR) and I really like them!
Not implying that TYR or A/S are poor quality - both served me well - Rokas fit my ugly mug better.
I give them two thumbs up...
You will likely get many replies to this with many different thoughts/opinions. Keep in mind... that which works well on my ugly mug may not work on someone else's face and vice-versa. See if you can find a local tri shop that will let you "test" a few models in the showroom - not sure that shops let you "demo" goggles like you can demo saddles before purchase.
    :-)
  • TYR Special Ops 2.0. I love 'em.
  • I always liked the old Googles. Great search engine. May it rest in peace.
  • I think no matter what brand of goggles you go with they eventually start fogging up. I always have some anti-fog spray in my bag and spray the inside of the goggle before each swim and then rinse in the pool water. I haven't ever had any fogging issues since I've started this routine.

I use Tyr Velocity's. Like Woody said though, you may get a different reply from every person that responds.
  • The size of your eye sockets and the separation between them dictate which goggles are best for you.
I use Speedo ones because they allow you to adjust the spacing between the lenses (which is a particular issue for me).
  • Aqua Sphere - Kayanne and Kaimen. Both come in smaller size for small or narrow faces. Many others I've tried are too wide at the bridge or don't wrap well enough on the outer end.
  • Agree with above. Just tried Rokas and pretty happy. They offer thirty day return thru website.
  • Btw, I use a small amount of Johnsons Baby Shampoo in the goggles and then rinse them out before each swim, including races.
They never fog up and the shampoo doesn't hurt your eyes.
  • I'm a swimmer trying to become a triathlete. Because of my background I like the traditional goggles, especially the less expensive ones. I use Sporti goggles and pay about $6/pair through SwimOutlet.com. When they start to fog up too much I just throw them away and get another pair. I go through about 2-3 pairs a year. Whatever you decide make sure they are anti-fog. I like Peter's idea with the baby shampoo because it I know works well with a scuba mask, but haven't tried it with my goggles. Just make sure you rinse them well.
  • I used Speedo Vanquisher for years and just switched to Tyr Special Ops 2.0. Love them.
  • I use the TYR Special Ops 2.0, and have had good success. They come in small and large size, so make sure which one you are getting especially if ordering on line. I was shipped a small and decided to try them out, not to bad except they fogged up quickly and don't have the same peripheral vision as the large.
  • Good grief. Buy some $15 Speedo Vanquishers or Tyr's and call it good. There's nothing magical about goggles, and thousands of competitive swimmers wear those two brands/makes for 15 hours a week. :-)

The baby shampoo trick works perfectly. The only trick is figuring how much to rinse them. Too little and they will sting a little and too much and it might not work. You just have to try it a few times.
  • I should have noted one other thing.... play with the nose bridge...try the different widths that are offered. That will make a huge fit difference to the point that leaky ones will stay dry and vice versa. And it isn't always obvious. I wear a smaller noes bridge than my daughter who started wearing the wide ones when she was ~13.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions about goggles! At least now I have a list of types to try out. I really appreciate all of your opinions. But let me say I feel like a total dork for asking about googles! Didn't even catch that before I posted. Thanks for not too much razzing!
