How Do The Data Geeks Add Swimming to WKO+3's PMC

There may have been a post on this a while back but I couldn't find it.

I use wko+3 to keep track of all my workouts (Garmin 310 xt for run and Joule 2.0 for the bike). I have a Garmin Swim for use in the pool and upload it to Garmin Connect after each session. It doesn't appear that I can directly use the Garmin Swim derived workout data in WKO+3.

What I am wondering is how do the data geeks estimate their swim TSS (and IF for that matter)?

  • Peter, I use WKO+ as well and dont have any issues with the Garmin Swim files.  I use Device Agent and upload the FIT files directly to WKO.  Below is the file from today's workout.

  • thanks Steve, I can now see how to import the files into WKO+.
    How about TSS?
  • Oh, just realized your question was about sTSS, not intervals. Sorry 'bout that. For sTSS I override using an assumed IF, often I just use .85. So if you rith-click the workout, select Override Values.. and enter your SWAG TSS. For an hour long session at 85% I put 85 in. If it was particulary hard, I put 90-95.
  • Thanks.
I have been using a SWAG as well. I have been assuming 1 TSS point for each minute of actual swimming. This assumes an IF around 0.7.
I was just wondering if there was a more accurate method.
I have a copy of Race Apollo that allows you to calculate a number similar to sTSS but is very fiddly to use.
  • Peter-- I don't know how scientific it is either, but I always used 1 TSS point per minute as well. If I crushed myself, I might round up or if I was lazy I'd round down. I always thought TSS points were a little weird when counting swimming towards my total Triathlon TSS score. For me, TSS was a measure of how destroyed my legs were (or might be). Since I always swam in a freezing cold pool, I thought the swims were actually therapeutic for my legs and almost counted as "recovery". This would actually be negative-TSS points when considering the effect on my legs. I know some people say "Stress is Stress", but I didn't add TSS points if I had a particularly stressful day at work, or shoveled snow from my driveway... I know some track TSS as a way to ward off getting sick or overtrained, but for me it was more of a look-back to see how I felt at different CTL or TSB levels all to try to hit the proper rest/fitness to peak for my A-Race. I also liked to use my "blue line" as a motivator to see how high I could push it, especially when compared to my previous year's self. This is the only reason I even put the Swim TSS score in at all. For swim comparison purposes, I mostly just looked at "hours spent" per week/month/season.
