Travel Tools

My first time traveling with my bike will be next month's IMLP camp.

My LBS will pack my bike into a bike box that I will borrow from them.

My rear derailleur, seat, handlebars and pedals will be removed.

Can anyone suggest a good multi-tool to take along for reassembly?

Or do I just bring a set of metric alien wrenches?

  • Hi Don - I carry the following set when I travel. For me, it covers everything on the bike, from pedals to the tiny brake screws.

    Craftsman Metric Allen Wrench Set

  • will try and send u a pic of my multitool. I have it with me when i race as it has everything u need (even a chaintool). If u go with a allen wrench set, make sure u have the big one for the pedals.
  • This is the tool that I carry while racing... in case the worse happens:  Specialized Bike Tool

  • I travel 5x per year with my tri bike, 20 break downs/rebuilds per year x 15 yrs, so 300 episodes. All I take (seriously) are: 4&5 mm allens, small special pedal wrench tool, small Phillips. Anything else, I go to the tent (never happens). I also bring other stuff, not needed for rebuild...elec tape, scissors, etc. I am putting my bike ENTIRELY back together with those three tools - bottle cages, handlebars, pedals, front brake cable, even re attach rear dérailleur sometimes. The Phillips is for adjustments to high and low screws, hardly ever needed. Pedal wrench is optional for putting on, needed for taking off.
  • I keep it simple too. Bring a small allen wrench set, my torque wrench, some tape, zip ties, and that's about it.
  • What AL said.....

If you've never done this, might be a good idea for you to dissemble and pack your bike by yourself to see how it comes apart.  once you get to LP, if you need help, we will be there to make sure that bike gets put back together safely.....

    See you at camp.

  • I bought a SCICON bag. All I remove are the wheels.

  • I've borrowed my friend's scicon bag for 3 trips this year, and do love the ease, but I would still recommend bringing at least some allen wrenches, as things have gotten out of whack in transit.
  • I have the basics in there too, there's a little pouch. Wrench for seat, pedals...basics.

  • What Al said, except I also carry that little star shaped wrench because for some reason Zipp likes to use that for the aerobars instead of a standard allen wrench. Grrrrrr.
