ITB and medial pain

Hi Team,

I've been suffering from knee pain for ~4 weeks - diagnosed by a physio as ITB and medial pain with some hamstring tightness.

Have been stretching and trying to keep up the cardio by cycling and using the Arc Trainer (similar to a cross trainer).

I have tried running once a week but each time am in a lot of pain. Conscious that the marathon is in 7 weeks and I haven't done a long run in at least 4 weeks I am seeking guidance on the best next move and any training advice.

Thanks,

Alison.

  • @Alison - I've had ITB syndrome a few times. It can be painful! It usually stems from tightness in the hip(s), since the IT band goes all the way from the hip to the knee. For me it has also manifested itself in lateral knee pain too which I feel after a couple of miles of running when I've had the issue. I can almost always feel it coming on ahead of time now since I've been through it before. I get through it quicker now by LOTS of hip stretching, LOTS of rolling the ITB (this is not pleasant!), and sometimes icing the area in pain.

Are just training for a marathon or are you biking too? If you are also biking, check the cleat placement on your shoes since this was the culprit for me the last go around.

    Good luck!
  • Alison, if you can bike, we can get you on the bike ASAP to follow the same basic plan using the bike instead. Can you use an elliptical without pain? If so, you could certainly do that...please advise what you have been doing so I can help with more specific advice!
