19 weeks to IMWI

Instead of calling this week 2 of 20, I am renaming it to a countdown in hopes of including everybody 20 or 12 week plans.  some of you have HIMs and other events and hopefully you will chime in too about your training and events and life even!

  • Adding another abbreviation to our growing list.  For me it's a NLD (no legs day), so that means AIP. image Masters swim later this morning. That will wrap up the training for today.

Following up with the doc today. Still not quite right, and I don't like his answer. Time for me to "grow a pair" and go after some answers. Happy monday errbody!

  • NLD for me today too! Linda, I did the same thing you did last week: 2 days of hard riding followed by a long run (with intervals). My legs are lead.
Day off today = running errands, pack up road bike for ToC, doing laundry.
  • New lurker visiting. If the scheduling powers allow, I will be joining the EN crew for my second attempt at number 6 after my little fiasco this weekend. Hope everyones legs recover well
    Lynne
  • Marianne- LOVE  the new name and way of counting down, not up!!

Lynne- We would love for you to join us!! Rest up and I  hope you've recovered from the hypothermia.

NLD  for me as well....Swam yesterday, will take today off.

  • Lynne- would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have you join the Cowgirls! You have lots of time to decide though. Take some time off, rest, recover, and then when your head is clear you can decide. You know we'll support your decision either way.

I was AIP @ 5:30. Yeeeeeha! Got the swim and the run done before work. Can't tell you how good it feels to put that big CHECK in the box before hitting my desk.
  • Just finished 4 x .5 mile repeats, finished up in 62 degrees sunny and 86% humidity. I like that!! slick with sweat was my best time. It take me forever to get that left leg warmed up so first .5 was 4:09 and the left quad had seized up with only a 2 mile WU (lesson learned), next one was 4:22, so way slower..... hmm, did some stretching and 4:15 and then I thought I was finished so did my lunges, hops, grapevine, kicks to front, side and back, jumps and I thought to myself, you know I think I could run another one.. and since last week I did 2 miles of "speedwork", I did another .5 mile and it was 3:51.... okay so lesson learned, this workout for me is about an hour and a half. I do best, dripping with sweat, already warmed up and complete mobility of my legs.....I actually could tell in the WU that legs were heavy and it had been since WED since I had run... which I don't like so gonna change that up a bit. I knew today I couldn't do 2 x 1 mile like last week, as the legs felt heavy....my zone 4 VDOT is 8:22 (old DOT) so these times were in the ballpark but I gotta tweak the system!!! the dog was running loose in the field beside me, soaking wet from the small ponds and tongue hanging out! he is now laying down after his speedwork!! m
  • Travel this past weekend limited me to a trainer ride on Sat and running around looking for spectating spots, with some TP intervals thrown in for work when time allowed, at my fiancee's half-marathon in Frederick on Sunday.  I wanted to get on the bike when we got home Sunday, but we dilly-dallied after the race and got home late.  So kind of a crappy weekend for me training-wise.

Today will be a HMP/TP run at lunch.

I need to AIP really soon since I'm scheduled to do the Kinetic HIM this weekend and I haven't swum once since IMC last August.  At this point I just need to remind my body what muscles to use to swim, not really expecting much more than that from the race anyway.  My swim times, even with limited/no training beforehand have stayed relatively the same the last 3 years so I'm not really worried about the swim.  When your technique sucks, you go slow, period - it doesn't matter how many hours of thrashing in the pool with sucky technique you've done.  Even with no swimming this year I'll probably end up with a 43-47' swim time, about the same as if I'd been swimming.

Trying not to let the race impact the rest of the week's workouts much since the DF and I are heading to Belize next week to look for wedding locations, so that'll be 6 days of run only.  However I'll probably take Friday off from any workouts to prep for the race, and likely dial back the intensity on Thursday's bike/run.

  • Tony: You're getting married in Belize! That's sooo COOL! I've always wanted to go there: amazing birding, great coral reefs to snorkel/dive, zip line through the jungle canopy. The running conditions will probably be like Eagleman...image
  • to look for wedding locations"
why don't you just get married next week since you are already down there? smile.

  • Monday Office Hours: Coach Rich will be "in" on Monday 5/3 at 8pm EST for some online fun.
  • NEW FTP! NEW FTP. I just went from 167 to 178. Wasn't expecting that! I am so happy, I am actually putting on my shoes to do the brick run I never do at ftp tests.

    Woo-hoo!

  • Woo hoo for Beth! That's awesome!
  • So happy for you Beth! I can't believe you ran afterwards!

Today was supposed to be a swim day. But I pulled a muscle in my shoulder yesterday doing pushups and it was so bad it kept me up all night. Its still painful so I decided to take the day off. Lots of Ice for me today!
  • Beth - that's SAH-WEEEEET!!!  Congrats!  Enjoy your new interval workouts!

Marianne - oh how I WISH we just do that!  When I think of the money and hassle we would save ourselves, but I don't think that's going to fly.

Kitima - I've been there once before and loved it, so I'm glad it made it to the final selection of sites.  I love scuba diving, so Belize is awesome for that.  Did a cave tubing trip that was fantastic too.  Not much for the Mayan ruins in the jungle thing, but it's cool to do once.  I'll have to look for the zip line thing though, that sounds pretty cool!  I'm expecting to be sweating like crazy when running down there, my main goal though IS to run - I don't want to get caught in 'vacay' mode!

Yesterday's run was pretty good on the first half, but I slowed way down on the second half - not entirely sure why.  Ended up out with friends last night so didn't get up early enough to do the bike this morning (but I usually don't anyway, so that's not too surprising).  I'll be hitting it after work, but my legs are feeling pretty tired recently so I'm wondering if maybe I should build an extra down day into this week's schedule before the race on Saturday.  I suffered through the bike portion last year, primarily due (I believe) to dehydration caused by some medication I was on, but I don't really want to suffer through the bike (and drop out of the run again) this year if I can avoid it - especially since I'm actually swimming (last year I did the B-R portion of the race as a relay team member).  I know the race isn't a focus of mine, but by the same token I want to at least be able to put forth a good effort.  So I'm thinking that if I don't cut it completely, I might just really dial back Thursday's run or replace it with an easier bike ride.  Obviously don't want to cut too much out since I'm losing all biking opportunities for 6 days (12-17).  We'll see how the rest of the week shakes out.

  • Day of rest. And yes, Tony, I'm a little skeered of the new zones I wrote on the white board last night. But that's a good thing, right?

Wedding in Belize sounds amazing. If you want to elope, I can send you my masters' thesis, which is all about wedding chapels and the culture of eloping to Vegas.

  • Oh Beth, that'sjust great! I can remember those wonderful increases two years ago. Ahhhh, memories.  May I feel the love again soon myself! Congrats, GF! You worked for it and earned it for sure.

  • Beth, CON-GRATS on the new  watts!!! You will have a love/hate the next workout

I  forgot how AOB, in the dark-thirty hours, makes you a wee bit tired midday. Was on the road by 510 this am. LOVE, LOVE  having the work done and it not staring me in the face all day.

  • Beth rocks ftp!!!  Your hard work is paying off!

AIP this morning, 3400 in the books.  Now, feet on the ground and running (family action) all day

  • Beth - Great work.  A new FTP and a new level of pain.  For me it is always a love/hate relationship.

I was really trying to be more active in the forum since we started the 20 week countdown, but for the last week I have been sidelined with a case of the shingles.  Even saying it makes me feel old.  The worst part was that it was in an area of my head.  My ear felt like a combination of the worst swimmer's ear ever and someone ramming a knife into it at sporadic intervals.  I could barely hold my head up.  To be honest, it was awful.  Today if my first day really up and at it.  I hope to get bak to exercise sometime later this week.  It has been really frustrating for me.

Always good to hear that people are out there gettin' after it.

    Todd

  • Oh Todd, I'm so sorry to hear about the Shingles. Aimee H is also just coming back from a bad case as well! You two can commiserate together! It sounds just horrible!

  • Yay, Beth! New FTP---woohoo!!
Yeah, the new zones take a few rides to grow into.

Shamefully, I was NOT AOB this morning. It was dark and I didn't want to ride the trainer. So I pouted briefly and went back to bed. Gina, do you ride in the dark at 5:30am? Soooo, I shall be AOB tonight.

Kit, I  should clarify. I was running this morning. But, yes, I  will ride in the dark when my bunny/neighbor/bigguy/jamie, will ride with me. While I  was training for IMFL 08, we would ride every Tues am together. Lit up like Christmas trees, of course!! I  loved it, we would meet at the mailbox @ 0455 and  the ride was done ; 6!!

  • Thought I would add a little testerone to this cowgirl forum along with Tony and Todd.

The shilngles is something I hope I never have to deal with, get better soon Todd.    Awesome recent FTP test Beth, that's a nice jump for a veteran member.

Ran Yesterday for the first time in 3 weeks after tweaking my calf ( tried 2 other times after giving it a week @ but repeated the injury) Actually did it on my last FTP test, pushed so hard that the calf gave out.  I hate injuries, but it did allow me to do a big bike week and ramp up the swimming ( lemons into lemonade thing).

Hit the roads this morning at 4:25 am, did my intervals for 1 hour by myself then met up with my group ride for another hour.  Have been doing this Tuesdays and Thurdays.  Makes for a great workout and still keeps me in the social mix.

Meeting a group of EN'rs (Coach P being one of them) Friday morning for a 6 hour ride of the Mooseman 70.3 course.   Can't wait to check it out simce it is a new course this year.

Off to a Lacrosse game.  Train hard !!

  • After biking 111 miles this weekend (previous weekend I rode 43 and that was longest since last summer)- a huge jump in mileage. I rested yesterday and had a massage, but still, my legs weren't really happy this moring. Got all the work done, but didn't get my paces for the BRick. Still totally worth it as we had perfect weather for biking.

It's hard to plan enough time to get legs up and ice bath AND download data. I am leaving for work later and later. I need to drop the OCD for data and do it when I get home!

Everyone sounds like they are mostly enjoying the training so far.

@ Tony- we were debating Costa Rica or Belize for scuba diving. We are going to Cocos off Costa Rica in June for 2 weeks. Very excited. That will be part of my "transition" before I start the 12 week IM plan.
  • Thanks, everyone. And I've never been called an EN veteran before. (need cute blushing smiley). I may finally be getting the hang of my powermeter!

I'm doing a vdot test tomorrow solo because there are no 5ks scheduled nearby this weekend. I'm viewing it as a practice test. But think happy, fast thoughts for me around lunch time!

  • AOB--1X8; 1x12, 1x10, 1x8 ;FT. 25' brick. AIP ~2000m @ 10:30.

The above cracks me up! Would anybody else have clue what that means? Pool is a little iffy b/cwork, but I think I can get it in.

  • Dang Linda, that's a mini Tri! Was there a swim on the schedule? Yikes!

Im doing the HIM plan which called for a Brick with 30/30s. But the fog was thick as pea soup this morning and it just would not have been safe to be out on the road. Top that off with the pulled shoulder muscle that's still healing and I just decided to swap today for tomorrow. So I did a long run of 90 minutes for 9.5 miles. Normally I'd get in at least 10 miles in that time, but I'm trying really hard to be patient about my speed returning.
  • Switching up things (on the HIM plan- 5 weeks till Kansas) so last night got in an hour on the bike (still recovering from century Sun so deviated from the 1X8, 1X12 & 1X20 FT's) rounded it out with 30 min brick, then on to the pool this morning for 3000. Swim feeling better. Wishing I could knock the bike out in the am but just not safe enough to ride in the dark/sunrise.

One of the girls I  work with, came up to me and asked, "WHAT  is all this AOB, AIS,etc stuff?"

  • AOB this morning by 6am. A bike is on the schedule...I was hesitant to do one as I'm still trying to claw my way back to the fitness I lost a month ago. I told myself: No drama. Just friggin' do it. Make it happen. So this would be my first FTP test with the Quarq. Since I spend most of last summer riding mtb, I've become quite the gear grinder---my average rpm's has dropped to 78-80. I decided this morning I'm gonna SPIN at a cadence of 90-92 rpms. That's all fine and well, but I can't barely come within 90% of my FTP spinning like that. So the bike test went out the window image as I figured it was more important to fix my cadence problem and not discourage myself with a bad result.
Going to do my brick run tonight with some running drills.

Plan for tomorrow: AIP at 5:30am
