Brad's Micro Forum

Hi Coach P-

Cograts on another stellar performance and your KQ at IMTX! I have a quick planning question for you. Rich has me in the HIM plan ending this week and then going into IM plan starting next week (5/25). I am racing a local sprint on (5/31) and then Quassy Half the following weekend (5/7). The sprint is obviously secondary, but would like to race it hard anyway and I'd like to be as good to go for Quassy as possible. I figured I'd finish up this week pretty much according to my plan. Any suggestions how I should line up training for those next 2 weeks so that I can taper correctly? My IM is in August (IMMT).

Thanks -Brad

  • B - Thanks man!!!! Quassy is such a technical course that your pre-race prep, nutrition, and pacing will all dictate a better race. So get all that right.

In my mind, a good taper for you is:

    1) Bigger biking this week, into the sprint. I'd go 2 solid bikes during the week (1 FTP, 1ABP), then ride long on the other non race day, just steady, really practice race fluid plan. 3-4 hours, nothing hard.

    2) Run drops down this week...like just 25 miles total...next week keep it to 15 pre race...we want fresh run legs.

    3) Swim as much as possible, maybe make 2 of your swims a 2k TT (one can be pull buoy) so you are mentally ready for it.

Once you are out of Rev3, you get to dial into Tremblant.

AGain, all race hydration on the bike, plan on it being hot so extra bottle in first hour. Good gearing for hills so you can spin, spin, spin...and good pacing so you finish last 15 strong on the bike, etc. Review heat lessons learned so you can handle the big climb and be ready for the final few miles! image
  • Got it - I Raced Quassy last year, so memories of that sufferfest of a run is still somewhere up there. Plan to tune in to your preview of the race this evening too. Thanks!
