Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim

Hi all, I'm seriously considering putting together a Grand Canyon R2R2R for May of 2016.  Obviously this would not be a "race" so I'm not sure if this the most appropriate place in the forums for this topic, but it seemed like a good place to start.

Has anybody here ever considered or completed this run?

Would anybody here be interested in coming along, presuming this actually plays out?

Is there any interest at all in this thread?!?

I've just started to investigate this so there is lots of time for planning and training, etc.  I'm just trying to see if there is any interest or knowledge within the team.

Thanks,

Clark

  • I'm definitely interested in the thread. Not saying I will do it though.

John Withrow has plans for later this year.....
  • Hey Clark...thanks for starting this topic. I've always wanted to do the R2R hike but never have. The R2R2R run sounds brutal and awesome from reading the below article. I'd be open to doing it, depending on where it falls in the year.

I'm serious thinking about an ultra next year, but thinking of doing an early season IM like IMCDA and then an ultra later in the season.
  • Gabe - thanks for the input. I saw that runners world article, along with several "race report" style blog posts. I'll post more resources here as I come across them.

John - I'm registered for IMAZ so November of '15 does not work for me. I plan to be in AZ for some family stuff in May of '16 so that's what I'm thinking. I look forward to anything you share from your experience.

I had no idea this was a "thing" until last weekend and I'm really intrigued by the idea. I did a point to point 50K last year that had ~5000 feet of elevation gain and ~3500 feet of elevation loss. I was pretty beat at the end but I didn't do much in the way of ultra specific training. That race was six weeks after IMTX so I mostly recovered and then started taking the stairs to and from my office (I'm on the 57th floor...). I would never attempt this without a more formal plan but I'm not intimidated by either the distance or the elevation.

Maybe I'll figure a way to make this a full 50 miles and do it as my 50 at 50...

Thanks again everyone for the interest.

  • Interested in the hike, yes. Run...HELL NO! You crazee! Good luck!
  • I'll put my name in for this adventure, hiking / mountaineering is my true love, HIM's and IM's only keep me in shape for my next trip.  This year a friend and i are doing the JMT trail, 220 miles in 8 days.

Keep me posted on the trip and / or ask any questions that come up.

  • Time for an update on this thread.

I will be in Arizona from ~May 20th through the 29th, 2016 for a family birthday celebration / reunion. If this run is going to happen, it will most likely happen on or around Monday 5/23 or Friday 5/27 but those dates are flexible. The birthday celebration is at Lake Havasu, so there are some logistics that still have to be sorted out.

Now that there are more specific dates, let me know if anyone is interested and I can start to put together a more specific plan.

  • R2R2R is on my list for next year, but I was thinking October. May could be pretty hot. I have a buddy who's doing it in October. I'll update with his key take aways.

Are thinking of going from the North Rim or South Rim? North Rim is a reasonable drive for me from SLC.
  • Gabe, I would be starting at the South Rim. I have family in Flagstaff and thus a free place to stay plus all of my travel will be through Phoenix. I'm pretty committed to the May dates based on my existing plans.
