Power Meter for a Cervelo P5. Need Advice

I just got a nice Cervelo P5. This is my second year in triathlon and EN. Today is my first anniversary with EN (yeyyy!!).  I have an old powertap power meter in my Trek TT bike that I used last season. However it is not wireless and I would need to use the old hub and wheel. I would like to leave that poiwer meter on that bike. I would like to hear your advice on what power meter and computer is recommended for a P5. Any advice? Thank you!

  • Have you called power tap? They had a deal for a while that if you sent them the wheel it was $350 and they would rebuild the hub and install all new insides bringing it up to the newest components and would be ant+ wireless. I reached out to them a couple months ago through their website and they called me back the same day. Very helpful on the phone. https://www.powertap.com/support/contact
You can ask them about rebuilding that wheel or what other options you might have. And then you could use that new power tap on either bike. And Reach out to Coach Rich about a wheel cover for race day use and you could have a pretty good package all together for less than $500.
  • Thank you John. Great idea!! I will certainly call Power Tap.

  • Dcrainmaker.com has great reviews and recommendations.
  • I just got a stages this year and love it.  It is simple to install and use and I am a novice...just sayin'

  • Carol and I have Power Tap on our road bikes and Power 2 Max crank based on our TT bikes. Mine is a P5. Both are great power meters!!Depends if swapping wheels is an issue for you.

  • The P5 is tough depending on what crank you have. I have Dura Ace 9000 and any of the crank arm based PMs will not work because of the clearance with the chainstay. I got a 4iiii Precision on preorder for $320 but had to return it for this reason. I ultimately went with a new Quarq. You can get the Riken AL model for under $800 with the DCR discount or the top end Elsa for about $1000
  • I ride a P5 and have used a bunch of power on it. The first season I ran Zipp 404 with Powertap hub. It was great training and racing. I tried using a rear wheel disc cover for races, but it never fit right. Something rubbed somewhere and it was just a mess. Last year I moved to a Zipp Super-9 disc. You can't use a Powertap with it. So I switched to Garmin Vector (pedal based) power. It worked really well and got me through the season. The issue was that Vector requires KEO style pedals. I juts DO NOT like them. I have been riding Speedplay for too long. The other issue is that when you remove Vector for travel the reinstall can be tricky. Sometimes the pedals are not detected and you gotta start all over. Then, when you get right, I seem to question the numbers for many miles. Just a weird insecurity I guess.

This season I switched to Quarq Elsa SR. This is likely the best answer if you want to some day run a disc. It fits right into the drive train and will allow you to tailor your chain ring choices to the course.
  • @VH, happy anniversary! I posted to dashboard that Stages has a shimano crank for $399 which is sick...I'd go with that, just email todd@ttbikefit.com image
  • @P...I don't think that will work. I have Dura Ace 9000 on my P5 and no room for crank based 'pod' PMs. Clearance on non-drive side is too narrow.
  • In my case I have a Rotor Crank. Thanks to all of you for your comments and insights.
