As with other tests ... VDOT, FTP ... The idea is to set a baseline and keep trying to improve it. Some folks may talk about a number, above which your probably need more stroke work and below which, you can probably focus more on fitness. In a 50 m pool, I'd guess that's somewhere in the 80-85 range: :45-7 + 35-7 strokes.
OTOH, there might be some controversy about working on *slowing* your stroke rate, which swim golf puts a premium on. Many people can benefit, for long distance swims, by working on a more rapid turnover.
