Try laying on the floor on your back. Sometimes the hard surface will bring relief. Another tried and true trick I use is a sort of reverse stretch. Lay on the floor on your stomach, then put your palms down on the floor next your shoulders. While keeping your hips ON THE GROUND, push off the floor with your hands - like a push up. Exhale as you push and hold it. This will create a curve in your back and give you nice pressure in your lower back. If it helps, keep doing it.
You can also hold yourself up on you elbows and rock your hips while keeping them on the floor. This feels good too. I generally do both of these as sets after a long run when I feel pain on soreness coming on.
Skip the chiropractor and go to a good PT, typically back pain is the result of transverse abdominus weakness and unless your chiropractor is taking you through an extensive lumbar stabilization program it will inevitably happen again. Also your PT can look a little closer to see the root cause of the pain, up and down the kinetic chain, assess your running, look at you on your bike and really get a good picture of what is causing your back to want to protect itself. Don't just put a bandaid over it, fix the dysfunction.
Jon,
I've just come off a Disc injury this past year.
Where is the pain located at mid or lower back? does the pain run up and down the legs? This may be TMI but, when you are taking a number two, does it hurt when you push?
It does not run down the legs. The hips hurt and yes hurts going number two because of the back.
It is the lower back area. advice? The chiropractor says its just pulled muscles and not a disc issue.
That's good news that there is no disc issue!
I had a bulging disc between L4-L5. Even though this sounds weird I was very luck it was a posterior bulging disc. Disc pushed out backwards out my back.... If it was anterior (towards my naval) all hell would've broke loose.
Keep resting and follow though with a good PT. they'll get you on track. If you can search through the chiropractors try to find one that focuses on spine physical therapy! I was lucky to find one and it makes a world of difference!
One point to think about is having a discussion about if there is a S-I joint issue... That nasty bugger creates all types of problems as well.
If you're crying (as I was) you may need a mild oral steroid. Ice is your friend if there's inflammation! If it feels better with ice stick with that. Also, the muscle relaxers might be keeping things too loose and allowing too much movement. (I was begging for anything to stop my pain, but the chiropractor and medical stopped me there).
Good luck!
