Bike Test week of Quassy Race

Just got my new Stages PM. Very Excited! Have previously been HR only for bike.

Plan: 2015 EN*Full, Beginner. Week 13, 8 weeks to IMLP

Racing Quassy Half this coming Sunday. Doing LP Camp next weekend.

Completed 4 hr bike Saturday, 3 hour Sunday, per week 12 plan.

Thinking I do Monday Swim, Tuesday Swim and threshold Run. Insert Bike Test on Wednesday in lieu of the 2 x 12" Z4, and 3 x 4' Z5 work that is scheduled. Will try to execute the brick off the bike to "wash" out my legs.

My logic is this. Planned to begin taper Thursday. Wednesday was already going to be a hard bike. So no worse off for Quassy (B race). Downside is potentially a "light" number on the test. However, will have a ball park number to work with going into Quassy and camp.

Thoughts?

  • Charles - Congrats on the PM! Your idea isn't a bad one, but beware: It takes a bit of practice to learn to ride steady watts outside when you first get the PM. When I first got mine, it was Winter and I rode with it on the trainer for several months and it was easy to keep my power steady. When I got finally got on the roads, watts were jumping all over. It took me 2-3 weeks to get the "feel" for it. The reason I mention this, is because it may make you a bit crazy trying to race off a goal power number at Quassy on Sunday. Another idea may be to ride by HR during the race and analyze your power profile after the race to get an idea of what power was matching up with your HR. Just an idea.

In any case, I look forward to meeting you on Sunday at Quassy!
  • @Brad Thanks! Super helpful.

I've set up my watch (head unit) to display 3s avg pwr alongside HR. I have another power page that is 4 pwr metrics but the power with HR was my intended default dashboard.
"Seeing" the middle power number you point out is consistent with everything else I've seen discussed.

I look forward to seeing you and the entire team in Quassy. Hopefully the rain holds off. Wasn't looking good past two days, forecast is improving.
  • Charles, whatever you do, make sure you pack the charging cords, you make sure it finds satellites there (day before say) and you remember to start it pre swim (with "auto shut off" disabled) so you can just hop on the bike and hit go! image

The data will be insanely valuable moving forward...excellent planning (and thanks Brad!).
  • @Coach P

Thanks! I'll test out the admin tonight.

I ended up cancelling the test. My calf is doing some weird thing with pain and tightness; and I'm sick with a head cold. I called the ball that it was better to take the rest leading into Quassy and Lake Placid training camp, rather than push myself potentially into poorer health.
  • Totally...foam roll that calf out!!!
