Race Rehersal Option for IMChoo

Yes, this is a few months away but just found out there is a century ride w/ my local bike team on the weekend of my final RR for IMChoo. (Convenient, huh?)  The course looks to be a wee bit hillier than IMChoo so I'm wondering if this is a good idea, or if I should find another route.... I like to the idea of doing the bike part of the RR as an organized ride (free food!) and may even be able to get someone to run with me after.  But I obviously want the best RR experience I can get.

  • Kim, just something else to think about- do you think you'd be able to do it as a RR- sticking to your paces, not stopping for long at rest stops, etc, or would you get sucked into the group feel? And make sure with that free food you still stick to your race day nutrition plan! A big upside to organized rides is that they are usually on quiet roads where you don't have traffic lights and all that that a lot of us have on normal rides.
  • Rachel's points are way more important then "a wee bit hillier". If it supports your ability to carry out your PLAN then do it.
  • To riff on what R&R have already intimated...it depends on what your goals are for the RR. If your goal is to simply put in the miles/time, then, sure, do it with a group. OTOH, if your goals are to literally rehearse for race day, nutrition, pace, riding style (low variability, minimum stoppage time), and set yourself up for learning what needs improvement, then, no, this is a bad idea.

There is no right or wrong answer. Many of us do IMs as an "event", and not as a "race", meaning completion is more important than time. In that case, following the EN RR protocol closely is not really necessary. If you are concerned with maximizing performance on race day, then, IMO, the RRs are the NUMBER ONE most important training days we have, and the protocol our coaches have refined over the years is very important to our race day success.

  • Your final RR is very, very important. You don't want to compromise it by incurring all of the possible non-RR admin and other costs noted above.
