Know Your Gatorade
Greetings!
Looks like the Gatorade offered at Ironman Canada Whistler this year may be the regular “G” version vs. the “Endurance” formula that was expected. The caloric composition is similar, however the electrolyte (and notably sodium) is different. Regular Gatorade has 160mg of sodium and 45mg of potassium while the Endurance formula which has 300mg of sodium and 140 mg of potassium. Both have 80 calories per 12 oz. What this means to you may need to adjust the sodium in your nutrition plan!
It would appear this quandary is exclusive to the Canadian races. The Ironman Canada Whistler site simply lists “Gatorade”. The Ironman Mont Tremblant lists the regular “G” series. The original press releases announcing the partnership with Gatorade listed the Endurance formula specifically for the US without clarification for the Canadian races.
Regardless, looks like it will be a great weekend to practice your warm weather nutrition plans! Cheers!

During my last two IMMOO I used Perpetuem on the bike in concentrated form for six hours with water in the torpedo. I then used the stuff available on the run for my nutrition there. Lately, I have been riding with Gatorade E and I seem to be doing ok with that when I use it alone or with water. I had great experiences with Perpetuem. However, I have noticed that when I drink both Perpetuem and Gatorade E (from the mix) on recent training rides my stomach can feel a bit funny on the ride. I'm thinking about switching to Gatorade E totally to reduce weight on my bike and to make it easier.
However, I don't know if I should mess with what has worked for me in the past. I do worry that the Gatorade won't sit well with my system during the run after using Perpetuem for 6 hours on the bike and I don't want to carry fluids with me on my run.
Are the bottles they hand you 20 ounces on the bike?
I bought a can of the endurance, thinking i'd try to get used to it. If they offer regular gatorade that's even more useless koolaid than the other. I think I'll just ignore it for a few months and use some of it closer to the race.
Of course you're right. It just all makes me a bit nervous. I'd rather not have to carry (forget/drop) much stuff with me. I've never done one of these things (IM or HIM) so I get a little cranky about it. I don't do salt pills and I don't want to. I also don't do gels so it's pretty important to have "stuff" in the bottles. I'll work it out. And maybe learn to meditate.
while we are at it, what else is on the course?
