Hoka durability?

Anybody else notice the Cliftons breaking down relatively quickly? I am running in a pair I bought in March, estimate I have 200-250 miles on them, and the right feels notably larger inside - almost like the foam is compressing out. Also, this is the second pair in a row where the instep side of the sole has began rolling away from the sidewall.

Also curious, are most running the race in these things? I am super happy with them (especially the first 150 miles), but remain curious if they are a good racing shoe.

Thanks,

DS

  • I love my Hoka Cliftons for training and racing. Enough cushioning to run a marathon but light and fast enough to run a 5k. I've run two 70.3s (soon to be three), a half mary, and an Ironman in them. They are the best shoe I've ever had, by a wide margin.

The first pair I bought had an issue with the color bleeding. I'm on my fourth pair, and haven't had the problem with any of the others. I'm replacing them every 500 miles. I still have the old ones that I keep for yard work and whatnot.

Just bought a pair of Hoka Challenger ATR trail running shoes, and they are hands down the best trail shoe I've had. Planning to rock these bad boys for my 50k.
  • On my second pair and just switching the two. No issues on durability. As for racing - yes - definitely. I also know a number of pros here in Boulder that are sponsored by them and racing in Cliftons....and they all checked them out before they signed on....including Dave Scott who was in them for over a year before he signed on....
  • I have raced in clifton's going on 2 years now and i really like them.  The cushioning to weight ratio make them a really good choice for racing.  Because i only race in cliftons in can't speak to durability as i probably have less than 100 miles on them.  For training i use Bondi's for the extra structure and support although the Bondi is not technically a stability shoe.

  • I sweat too much to use Clifton's in a race. I might as well strap on ankle weights. But apart from that, no, they last a freaking long time. Can we ask how much you weigh?
  • I am weighing in now around 186. I just bought a new pair and did my long run today in the new ones, felt better.
  • I have one pair of Cliftons that I've used only on the Treadmill and ive gotten 350 miles out of them with enough life for another 50. I bought a 2nd pair of Cliftons, used them exclusively outside and after 151 miles the ou t soles have disintegrated. They are extremely comfortable and fast but kind of hard to justify spending $1 per mile on a pair of shoes when I run so much.
  • My Cliftons have been much more durable than I ever expected. I have about 200 miles on my first pair and about 100 or so on my second pair and I rotate between them (amongst rotating through a whole bunch of other kinds of Hoka's).

If you want a deal on them, you can buy them here for $89 if you're an elite member and they have your size (even better with the 15% pop-up coupon): http://www.thetrishop.com/brands/hoka-one-one.html?utm_source=Hoka+Customers&utm_campaign=baefc2941c-clifton_sale6_10_2015&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_521398d52d-baefc2941c-407355953

Now that the Clifton 2 is out, you might see other deals popping up.
  • I just bought a pair of the Hoka Clifton 2 for $104 with my VIP benefits using code CF15H60E at http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/products/02073/mens-hoka-one-one-clifton-2/

Was curious to give them a try...
