How Much Can I Ride on the Trainer w A Good Tire?

So my tri bike is on the road now and the "crap" trainer tire is off. With some expected rain this week, I'd like to do a short VO2 wko on the trainer. How bad is it for my good tire? How many miles can I get away with without compromising the tire? I really don't want the extra admin of swapping tires... Thanks!

  • Kim, I don't think a few trainer rides will have much effect on your tires but if you don't want to or cant afford to get new tires IMChoo, better switch to training tires that you can ride in and outside thru August. Then put your race tires back on a week out from the race.

The other option is to have a new set of race tires to put on just before IMChoo and use what you have on for training until then.
  • Steve- Thanks for the input! I will 101% be planning on new tubes n tires pre-IMCHoo. Just want to make sure they make it through til then. I think they're pretty new. More of a training tire anyway. ie Gatorskin type
  • I don't ride a tire on the trainer and outside, mainly so I get some practice changing a tire.  I don't tend to get a lot of flats so the practice is good but the extra admin time is a pain.  Having said that one short vo2 session should have little effect unless your trainer really chews up tires.

I follow Steve's lead.  I also try to get out in the rain at least once before my race season.  Yes I actively look to ride in the rain even a shorter session to test my handling/braking etc in those conditions.   Why, I'd hate to be descending in to Keene at IM Lake Placid riding in my first rain of the year.  Then of course you need to clean/lube the bike up after the ride which is admin time as well.

  • I've had luck placing a "gator skin" tire on the back so I can ride indoor and outdoor throughout the season with no issues. For the races I then put on a racing tire. Those Gator skin tires are almost indestructible and I doubt the trainer has much effect on them. For the Winter season I place an old race tire on the back and ride it all winter. Would not consider riding that tire outdoors.
