Is there a way to get a good swim workout in a short pool

I am going on a business trip and staying at hotel that has a 60 foot pool.

Has anyone found a good way to get a good set in using a short pool?  Or is it a waste of time?

Would it work to just not push off the wall forcefully at turns so there would be more distance for actual strokes?

  • I took a group swim class once where they had us do drills in just half a length of a 25 yd pool, so that is an option. Might be better to use what time you have to just keep up run frequency and maybe jump in the pool as recovery.
  • IMO, short pools can provide a place to work on improving your stroke via drills.
  • My husband and I purchased swim a band for the apartment pool in Africa. It worked to get HR up and steady but my stroke was a little wonky and did not feel natural at all. I had to work hard to stay in alignment but was able to really focus b/c there was no turning. I used my paddles to really feel my catch and follow through. It may be a good idea if you travel a lot.
  • I used to travel a lot and tried a swim band aka surgical tubing it's hard to find a place to tie it off to get the correct angle. The biggest problem I had was the hotel pool temp was so hot you couldn't swim for very long without overheating. Imo I think you'd be better off doing dry land with surgical tubing than swimming in a hotel pool. One recommendation I might have is to get a y membership most will let you use the away membership feature for no cost.
  • Ken, 60 feet is 20 yards.  I don't consider that to be that short.  When I was young in the 1960's I swam in a couple of meets in 20y pools. Its 5 lengths per 100y, so easy to calculate distance.  You should be able to get good wko's.  I would do your regular turns unless you have a terrific pushoff.  Then you could back off on the push, but realize you will lose some momentum which may impact your form for a couple of strokes.
