Mark Lane's Challenge Williamsburg 70.3

Before I say anything whiney, let me say that I am blessed to be doing this and have a super supportive "Sherpa" wife. It was also great to meet EN'ers Trent Prough and Nate Parady.

Race morning: Left house at 0330, had 2 bananas, a Saltstick, and a Cliff Bar on the way. Sipping Gatorade and water up to racetime.

Swim: 48:53 No wetsuit, and I'm not a good OW swimmer. Shallow start/finish, current, and I hit my foot on something near the finish.

T-1: 5:39  it's about 1/4 mile from water, took time to sunscreen up. Left big toe cut and bleeding, not too bad, just wiped off, put some aquafor on it and took off.

Bike: 3:07:21 Started easy, got my 30' of JRA, then settled into plan. Because of heat/humidity backed off and rode at .75 IF and 1.04 VI. Per hour: almost 2 bottles Gatorade Endurance, 2 gels, Salstick, and some water. Had Garmin set to alert 10' to drink, got fresh bottles every aid station so I had something cool. Only spiked HR/power once for a short duration, kept HR at 140 or less- mostly. Felt like I had a well executed bike. P'ed at mile 35.

    T-2: 2:53 Smooth and fast

Run: I really thought I was set up for the run, I even p'ed at mile 4! My best 70.3 run is 2:17, so in the heat I was pacing 2:30ish. By half way, I was way overheated,  run/walking to control HR, and that cut toe not happy in soaked shoe. Finished a little disappointed at: 3:03:51

Take aways: Going to work on OWS skills, even get some help. Still feel like bike execution was good, I just didn't handle the heat on the run. Don't really know what to do differently other than get some arm coolers. I put ice in my run cap, wasn't good enough, need to try the bags.

  • The toe thing would probably do me in. Thanks for sharing!

  • Mark, Great to meet you on the beach that morning. It was a tough day out there on the run for sure. Staying cool was not easy. I had a bag filled with ice for most of the run and I was still overheating at times.
  • I know it was extremely warm the weekend of your race, way to get the job done and cross the finish line! I can't imagine dealing with a toe like that for that length of time, that shows some huge toughness!
