RaceDay Wheel rental

Any comments or feedback on renting wheels for race day?  I am practicing long rides on zipps (tubular) but per recent feedback, would like to use clinchers for race day.

  • I have done it, but I went through the process with a friend at IMChatt. He does it at every race. The process seemed painless. He dropped his bike off and they did the install. The add your cassette or cassette of choice, not sure which, and make sure you have the right brake pads.

The only issue was the wait. It was supposed to take 4 hours. It took about 8 because of the a backlog. YMMV.
  • @Lauren- I also rented a set once, but did it at a LBS. I think they let me have them for 5 days or so, but it was super easy. No long wait and price was inline (or cheaper) with renting them at the race site. Call around and check out local options.
  • I've rented wheels before and the experience was excellent. The main concern with renting in my opinion, is that you are racing with equipment you have never used before. Bike handling and how the wind / cross winds help or hinder the ride could make a big difference. If you rent them, try and get out a few times before the race.
