When is it too hot to do IM?

Seems I as much fan support for CDA as I am "WTF do you plan to do in 106 degree heat?" Do officials have some sort of limit for this type of activity at heat?

I don't mind suffering, but I am beginning to question the value of the training if we are all going to be death walking to the finish.

  • It is a bit disappointing- I've been happy with my run and pretty sure that is melting away. Honestly if this wasn't part of a family vacation, I might have been a DNS, but we'll go and make the best of it. I did Muncie 70.3 back in 2012 when they shortened the course to a glorified Olympic because of the heat. I'm not sure what the exact temp was, I think just upper 90s, but humidity was ridiculous. I remember hearing a lot of it wasn't because of the athletes, but concerns for volunteers and spectators.

  • I'll be very unhappy if they shorten this race!
  • I saw on Slow Twitch the plan is to make it 70.3 if the temps are north of 100. Sucks. I was thinking about IMCDA for next year, but two years of bad weather puts it in the Tahoe cursed category.
  • At 106 degrees, WTC will need to give a lot of thought to shutting things down early. At those temps, the local medical crews may get quickly overwhelmed. It happened a few years ago at the Green Bay Marathon which got the black flag at 2:30 into the race.

Good luck to everybody!! Race safe and remember that there will always be another race to PR or KQ.
  • Should be interesting regardless. Will just need to stay ahead on hydration on the bike. And slow down on the run.

The humidity will be low. So actually may feel better then the recent texas iron.

Sorry if gets changed to half for those that want a full. But for me, may be good to go shorter and faster. Just rip it and die.
  • Rob is right,  usually TX is one of the highest Heat indexes around....and they manage through that one.  However, I can truly appreciate the shock from all the northerners on these projections........

  • I wrote my PSA on the CDA forum before I saw this thread. My opinion about race day safety is: if on the morning of the race, the predicted hi temp is above 102, WTC should alter the race to a 70.3 with a 6 AM start for AGers. Otherwise, for full IM, start pros @ 5:20 and Agers soon after 6 AM. I would not race a full IM, or at least not do the marathon, if the temps are above 40C (at the start of the run), but I've got a finisher's medal or two, and surely don't need another one that badly.

The last thing they want/need is a death from heat stroke. As it is, the DNF rate will be will past 20%.

"Studies show" the fitter the athlete, the better they do in the heat, regardless of acclimatization.
