Recent Power Test Qeustion
Dear WSM's:
Power Test yesterday.
5' NP 333 (mostly against the wind)
20' NP 264 (looped against the wind and with the wind, then against again)
Course was very windy, course had lots of bends in the road, ie. wind was hitting me at different angles.
When I plug 264 into calculator Z5 is 276-301, well below 333. What would a WSM do for my new power zones?
Thanks for your help

I would use 264*.95 = 251 as my FTP and go with it.
Your ratio of VO2 to FTP is 333/251 = 1.32. What does that mean???? Either you have a very high "roof" relative to your "ceiling" meaning that FTP work is your limiter or you just really blew the 5min out of the water.
Regardless, I would work with the FTP you earned. Give it a go for a few weeks. If it feels too easy, then bump by 5W and go with that for a while.

John-
In addition, that 5' VO2 interval isn't necessarily to set your VO2 zones. It is to load your legs up heading into the 20' FTP go. Studies show that the 95% of the 20' interval is much more accurate if the legs get toasted for a short while and then a brief recovery before the 20' test.
It's not as much for a VO2 benchmark as it is for an accurate FTP interval.
Agree with the others...use the FTP you earned. You can always retest in a few weeks if needed. Or swag if it's too easy or too hard. And, train with the VO2 zones set by our calculator, IMO.
