Ftp test and average watts on 310xt

So I did my test tonight and got a 1 watt bump lol.  The strange thing was that while I was riding, my average watts per lap displayed differently than when I downloaded everything to wko.  During the test, my lap 1 was 216 avg, lap 2 was the rest, then lap 3 was 218 avg.  My last tested ftp was 210.  While killing myself to keep those watts over the 215 avg, the thing that kept me going was knowing that I was about to get a 5-10 point bump.  I get home, download the info from my 310xt and the lap averages display as lap 1 = 205 and lap 3 = 207 (i think).  My NP was 211!  I wonder why it downloaded differently?  Oh well, I guess on the next test, I'll really be motivated to keep those watts up hehe.

  • The 310XT doesn't average zeros, so whenever you were coasting, those weren't being averaged in. WKO or whatever other software you downloaded do almost certainly does include the zeros in the average, so it's going to be lower.
  • Were you on a trainer or outdoors? On trainer AP is very close to NP - outdoors NP is usually higher.

Be sure to check out EN teammate Craig Harris's Garmin Power page
  • This is my first season using the PM / 310xt / WKO combo and I have also noticed this, I was not aware that the 310xt dropped zeros from it's average power (still have not seen this officially stated anywhere, but see it theorized on other boards) however that would make sense given some of the results I've seen.

For my all of my winter indoor FTP tests my NP in WKO would always be higher than my 310xt intervals, this again would make sense as there is no coasting, for me at least, on the trainer, I always have to keep pedaling or it grinds to a hault in a hurry. Recently however, I have been seeing some big numbers on my 310xt average power and expected to see some even bigger numbers in WKO and instead have been seeing that my average outdoor power including coasting is a lot closer to my pNorm from WKO.

The funny thing is that if this is the case, you are actually 'penalized' on the 310s average by continuing to pedal rather than coasting, say you take a recovery interval and pedal lightly, those low watts will be fed into your average while if you had just coasted it would have stayed higher. In the end though, it seems that your pNorm in WKO tells the real story so I'd just go with it.
