As a newbie to the club I thought I would tell you my story on how it all started with Triathlon. In 2009 I jumped into 3 half's to get me ready for Lake Placid in 2010. I was hooked after that and with the next full at Mt. Tremblant in 2012 followed by Florida in 2013. The volume of training was becoming too much and my plan was to get faster and work on half distances the next year. The next year was probably one of the hardest years as mom lost her battle to cancer, I kept training though trying to keep a positive mind and did pick a late race which was Miami 70.3.
Joining EN in late November of 2014 I was ready to work harder, get smarter and go faster. This has already paid off with my race in April at the Memorial Hermann Texas 70.3 which I cut 25 minutes off my previous race and leading up to Muskoka's race I cut 12 minutes from my Texas time, not to mention that this Muskoka course is much tougher than Texas too. I believe coming into this race I haven’t been this fit since the start with triathlon.
Race Morning:
Race day came at 4 am in Muskoka, got my calories in me was out of the cottage at about 5:15. The drive is about 40 minutes to Huntsville from where I was and it was looking like a beauty of a day for a race. After I was dropped off I walked to transition to get the gear ready, pump the tires and made sure everything was in place. I had my last washroom visit and the announcer told us the water was a comfy 68 degrees definitely wetsuit friendly. It's a good walk from transition to the beach where they had the waves setup.
SWIM- 39:07 – under 40:00 was my goal – Swim still needs work
My Age group was the last wave to go, I had plenty of time to warm up which was great. Got to almost the front of the line and my plan was to stay right of the buoys which this worked out throughout the swim. Choppy at times with lots of bumping, and this went on for about 500 m. This lake is also weedy noticing this on my way into the last 3 buoys. So talk about this swimmer behind me trying to stay on my feet which this got very annoying very time hitting my toes. I quickly started kicking harder which this finally ended. My sighting was right on and hit every buoy straight to the finish. Out of the water and over to get stripped and then the long climb up a fairly lengthy hill that seems to go on forever into Transition for this race.
T1 - time 6:47 long way to transition area but still needs to work.
BIKE – 2:56 – 94km, additional 4 km to add for this course, my goal was to stay under the 3 hour mark.
The bike course here is a tough one and my plan was to not fry my legs to early. With my HR already high I knew I needed to get this down soon even though the rollers start right away. I had to hold off and wait for the first descent which then became more comfortable in Z3. The rollers are constant for 20km until you come to the two highways 35 & 117 which is where you can make up some time. There are still a few climbs in this stretch which it's about 40km until you again meet more rollers and few more climbs right to the finish.
T2 – time 3:55 This was much better than Texas
RUN – 1:55:18 – Goal was to keep it under 2 hours.
The run too here is mostly up hill to start and then it evens itself out when you get onto hwy 60, a good flat stretch which takes you into the town. My legs felt pretty good off the bike and my plan was to hold zone 2 for most of the run. For the first time I had no bottles with me and the plan was to just take water and salt which turned out to work great the entire run. The only concern I had with this run was again with my HR being a bit high.
Nutrition:
Swim: no gel this time, 1 bottle sports drink
Bike: Went through 1 gel 3 bottles of infinit and some water through the water stations.
Run: 1 gel, Water at every station, salt
Overall the race went really well I felt more comfortable in each segment need to work on a few things, transition is one and hopefully getting a better handle on my HR between segments. I would refer this race to those who like to climb and enjoy a challenge. A few things to note is they really need to work on the local roads which hopefully will be addressed in years to come seeing they now have a full here.
Next race is Arizona Oct 18th
