Arm rest pads keep slip sliding away

Regardless of what I do, the velcro on my arm rests comes loose from the metal bracket after a couple of rides.  I have tried cleaning the bracket with acetone, goo-b-gone, and any number of other cleaning products before sticking on the industrial strength velcro I bought at Home Depot (and also the velcro that came with my CeeGee pads).  I've also tried various glue and adhesive products, but nothing seems to work.   I now keep a Garmin mount black rubber band around each of my pads and bracket, but there has to be a better way.  I have not yet tried double sided tape, but am contemplating going in that direction.

Any suggestions on solving one of life's great dilemmas?

EDIT - I have a Felt B2 with the stock aerobars and arm rest cradles, and have CeeGee pads.

  • Hi John - if I was going to try tape, I would think about using carpet tape. That craps seems to stick to anything!

I'm not sure which bars you have, but it may be possible to swap your current armrests out with THESE from Profile Design (only change the armrests and pads)? Anna has this set and I didn't have any trouble getting the velcro to stick. Have to be a little careful removing the pad to make sure you don't pull the velcro up too, but they have remained in place.

  • I had the same issue with my trek/bontrager aeropads they stuck with glue, I tried double sided tape, but when you sweat they slide. I ended up buying replacement pads http://www.tri-zone.com/Profile-Design-F19-Pads.html These have a velcro and cloth on each end that fit over the aerobars that helps hold them in place in combo with the velcro.
  • What is the condition of the hook side of the velcro on the base (metal/alloy/carbon/whatever) side of the arm rest? does it still have the gripping strength to grab other velcro items?

I had a couple of issues with velcro and the replacement f-19 pads from Profile Design. Then 6 weeks ago, got the profile design f-35 replacement kit which included the aluminum base. The velcro on there is nice and strong and they are comfortable. If the mounting holes line up with what you have I would recommend it.

The velco is great; it holds and won't let go.  It is the adhesive to the metal arm rest that is the problem.

  • I agree with John on checking the hook part of the velcro. I bought CeeGee pads this year to replace oem pads on my 3T bars and they have been great so far..no slippage. I left the original hook side Velcro on the aluminum arm cups.
  • John, I am sorry. I was thinking it was the velcro. It seems like you have tried so many cleaners and bonding agents. It might sound crazy but would you be able to drill and install a half dozen small pop rivets?

    Sorry could not help more.

x2. CeeGee Cushys are awesome. They barely lose their form either!

  • John, I ride a Felt B12 that has the same pad set up as the B2. IT.IS.A.POS. (the pad configuration, not the bike). After trying most of the options above, including attempting to change the pads themselves, I ended up

    1. Installing double sided velco on the bottom of the stock pads.

    2. Having a bike shop drill pop rivets into the bottom half of the velco system (thereby attaching the bottom half of the velco to the metal pad rest).

    3. Attaching the arm pads to the bar via the now bolted on bottom velco half.

The standard stock Felt pads still suck (rubber/gel that gets very slick with any sweat) but this solution has kept it attached to the bars for 2+ years. YMMV.
