Athlete Tracking for Family

I have a feeling this topic has been covered but I just cannot get the SEARCH function on the forums to work. My family would like to track me this weekend at Racine and I am not sure what to tell them. I know they can get text messages from Ironman.com when I reach certain milestones but last year when I volunteered at Wisc people were tracking their athlete exactly on the course. I searched for an app but a few different ones came up. Any suggestions on which app might work the best for the family? Would like to cross this off my to-do list for the weekend.

Thanks in advance.

  • Too late for Racine, but I've used MyAthleteLive for my two IMs. You wear a little gps sensor on you and they can track you on the course. Not super cheap, but I feel like it is very helpful for my family who is spending their money coming out to support me if they have a better idea of where I'm at.

MyAthlete is a little box widget dealio that you carry with you during the race. It gets your location via cell signal then updates a page that your family can watch. However, I doubt you'd be able to hook that up before the race this weekend.

Beginning 2015, no electronic devices (cameras, cell phones, etc) are allowed to be carried by athletes on the course. So, technically and per the rules, you're not allowed to carry a phone with you that your family could then use to track you.

  • Notwithstanding the rules, I use my Iphone in a ziplock bag, which is inside a sock in T1. I slip it into my jersey pocket in T1. I use the App, 'Find my friends' which is free (I think). My wife has the same app and can track me in real time. It works great.
I assume if I don't take it out of my pocket, I'll be okay as far as the Tech Officials are concerned. So far so good.
