Greg's Micro Forum

Patrick - I posted this to my macro forum earlier this week and never got a reply.  I realize now it is probably better posted here, so I'm hoping you can help me out.  I am currently finishing week 11 of the intermediate short course plan with target race on 9/20.  I've completed almost 4 full weeks and so far everything is going really well.  I need to adjust my schedule for an upcoming vacation and want to get your advice.

One week from now I'm going to be spending a week (9 days total) camping and hiking in Glacier NP.  So while this will be a very active vacation (we typically hike several miles per day, including some tough climbs), there won't be any triathlon specific training during this trip.  This corresponds to week 13 in my schedule, as well as the weekend at the end of week 12.  Looking ahead, week 12 appears to be the beginning of block 3 with repeat testing, and I wonder how useful or accurate these tests will be immediately before this break in training.  How would you recommend I adjust my schedule over the next couple of weeks?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Greg, sorry you never heard from Coach Rich! I am technically the vacation guy, so glad you found me here. image

Bottom line is you'll still have 7 weeks to prep for the race...and that trip is epic...so I consider this a win/win. The only reason I see testing as valuable is to confirm / deny your gains to this point. Not as a training tool for the 7 weeks (after your vacation).

So if you think you have gains, then yes, adjust week 12 to get the testing in and pick up on week 14 when you return, understanding that Mon to Fri will be more about getting back into your groove than anything else.

If you don't think you have gains, then just skip week 12 and go to week 13, knowing that the following week will be "off-ish" from a triathlon standpoint makes me feel like that's ok...

Let me know what you think!
