Bike trainer wear & tear

I have a Kurt Kinetic road machine and I just noticed that I have actually worn a groove into the metal cylinder that the tire makes contact with. The groove is a couple millimeters deep. Is this a part that needs to be replaced periodically? Has this happened to anyone else?

  • Not on mine....that piece is like new. However, the skewer lock that holds it in is rusting from all the sweat dripping all over.
  • You gotta get outside more, Peter....
  • Strange. Mine has about 12 seasons of a lot of hours use with no wear on the roller. Then again, I've seen this with the trainer at the LBS fit studio, and thought something must be off.
  • Peter,

I've had mine Kurt Kinetic a long time, I believe as long as I've been with EN.  I went downstairs and checked mine and yes there is a groove in the metal cylinder.  I have no idea if this needs to be replaced but I've used the same old tire the last couple out seasons with no ill effect to the tire.  I did a lot of trainer time this IM plan with several 4-5 hour rides due to forest fire smoke and repair issues with my bike.

  • You must be throwin' down some watts to have rubber wear a hole in metal ; )

I checked and do not see that at all on my CT or Kreitler rollers.

Upshot is that Kinetic has a lifetime warranty: https://kurtkinetic.com/warranty/
  • Peter, My cycleops had the same groove from the rear tire and it worked fine until the fluid part failed and then they sent me a new one. As long as the trainer is working, I don't think it is likely to be worth worrying about.
  • Thanks everyone. I will shoot them an e-mail just to see what they think, but I won't worry too much about this. And yes Dino, I wish I could ride outside more image
