  • Wow, Dawn and Frank really outperformed for the team, I am sorry we didn't get to spend a lot of time together, I met Christi in Transition during the set up, Tim and I crossed paths several times, actually he passed me on the bike like I was standing still. Rachel and Pat, great meeting you at the finish! I did get lots of encouragement from non EN members that obviously know about the team and listen to the coaches. I'll put together my race report over the next few days and post it here.

  • Niels Heemskerk Ironman Racine 70.3 2015 race report

I arrived Saturday afternoon little after 2PM, the line at check-in was not long at all, got all the paperwork done, and for those All World Athletes, they have a separate check-in table, but once passed that you are in line with everyone else. The transition started to fill up, but I was in and out quickly. No need to review the swim course as this was the fourth Racine for me. My goal was to really learn to use my newly acquired power knowledge and FTP to be able to run all the way, and get a sub 6 hour time. Alas the final results on the run were not what I wanted, not the right answer for someone that has been in the EN Haus for 3 years.

    Swim:

Since the water temperature was 60 degrees, I decided to wear my booties and double-capped it, I spent about 15 minutes in the water before lining up for the start. The lake was like a mirror, not a wave to be seen, air temperature about 70, perfect conditions. I lined up on the front on the outside left as all buoys had to be kept to the right, I decided to swim on the outside staying clear of the masses. Had a very comfortable swim, realized a 2:02/100m avg. my goal speed was 2:00/100m. Came out of the water with a very painful left hamstring, something I have never had, and don’t get because I don’t kick much except for keeping my body aligned. It did go away and I was able to run the pretty long way to T1.

    Bike:

Slow is smooth, I had a great transition, quickly getting the bike out on the first steep ramp, for future Racine participants, make sure you are in the granny gear as the ramp out of transition is rather steep. My heart rate was around 150, not too high, but I decided to go at 75% of FTP (225) at 168-170 for the first 10 miles, everything felt great, heart rate started to drop to 144 and I felt strong. I did lose both of my Infinite bottles, the first on a bump 5 minutes into the bike the second one bounced out of my hands on a bump on mile 10 or so. My Specialized Shiv’s fuelsalage was filled with a bottle of Infinite so that was a big save. I did have salt with me and took three tablets with the Gatorade Endurance from the aid stations, hate that stuff. After 10 miles I started dialing it up, by now the wind had increased to 10mph, not super bad, but it was mostly on the front or the side, not sure why we never turned purely down wind. I did have a problem getting my power up to my goal when going downhill into the wind, anyone …thoughts? The last few miles I started a slight tinge of cramping in my quads. Something that really started to bother me on the last few miles on the run.

    Run:

T2 very smooth, walked to the course, and settled into a 10:30 pace according to my race plan, after 4 miles with just walking 30 paces at the end of the aid stations, I started to boost the speed, but found it hard to go faster than 10 on average. I ended up with an average 10:51 pretty painful quads and calves. Took until Wednesday night after the race to feel normal again.

Learnings: I need to run more in practice, it is my least favorite, I also need to harden up, the pain is not so bad that I could not run through it, so I am getting ready to prove that at Steelhead, I have a bunch of friends that are 20-35 years my junior doing that race, and I really want to kick some butt.

  • Neil, did you also put this race report in the race report forum???
