New Stages PM & no Garmin 910 reading

Bummer!!  Just rode 1st time with new Stages PM, after switching bullet-proof Quarq to road bike, and got zippo watts on my Garmin 910 (when in the aerobars.)  I knew it was a little risky, but the Stages was a great deal, and I wanted shorter cranks on the TT and a PM on both bikes.  I thought I'd done enough research, but wow... after reading some posts on slowtwitch, I may have made a different decision!

So, question for you Stages user, what head unit do you use to pick up the Stages output (especially on race day?)  I haven't ridden with a bike computer in ages, since I get everything I need on the 910.  Looks like I'll now need to buy a Garmin 500 or 510?  or something else?  I assume I then need to upload data from the bike computer and the 910 to Trainingpeaks, which is where I track/analyze data?  How does that work, with two different units uploading the same workout?  Please don't say I'd have to manually update all but bike workouts from 910 and then bike workouts from the bike computer.

Really bummed... just another hassle, system to learn, thing to remember on race day, and of course, cost!

  • Julie,

for the 910XT, do you have it on your wrist or on a handle bar mount? Seems to be some issues with it attached to your wrist for some reason.

If you have TrainingPeaks, it's real easy to upload multiple devices to your account. I upload my 910 tri watch, my 810 cycling watch, my withings scale, and MyFitnessPal for food and it all works seamlessly. The Garmin stuff goes through Garmin Connect that syncs with Strava and Training Peaks. Withings is wifi enabled and MyFitnessPal is an app on my iPhone. Last week I got WKO 4.0 which syncs with TrainingPeaks. Data everywhere and no issues with syncing image
  • Hey Tom! It's on my wrist - how I race. That's good to know that all gadgets sync seamlessly. I guess I'll have to get one of the Garmin computers, which I know nothing about. They're not cheap! But, on the plus side, it will be easier to read... once I figure out how/where to mount it!
  • oh and Tom... I thought withings was a typo; had to google it... what a cool looking watch! image
  • I have a Stages PM.  It has worked great with everything but my Garmin 920XT.  I use a Garmin 510 on my bike with no problem,  I even tried putting the watch on the left side of my handlebar, but it still dropped and reconnected multiple times.  If I figure out a solution I  will let you know. Other than that I have had no problems with the Stages and really like it.  Sorry not much help.
  • Julie, I've got their scale. http://www2.withings.com/us/en/products/smart-body-analyzer. I love it. Super simple. The watch does look pretty cool!
  • for some reason, the Stages signal isn't that strong and your head unit will loose it if it is too far from the crank..(ie: i had it at the far end of my tribar, tucked between my wrists and it won't get the signal. It will catch it if put my hands on the brakes.... so i now have it on my stem, works great). Plus, there are some very weird stuff (like it will not calibrate if you have "HR on" in the system and the head unit doesn't catch your HR strap...)...check the user's manual.
  • I've used my stages PM with my Garmin 310XT and my Polar V800. The 310XT was painless. The Polar took a year of software updates to get there.

I've read of people using a Viiva HRM as a bridge. The HRM will see the stages PM and broadcast the data to the Garmin. I was about to go this route this year when Stages and Polar both released updates and finally viola for me.

  • Julie,

based in Anthony's comments, I have an old 310XT you can try to pair with the Stages power meter. If it works you can have it.

  • Haven't solved this issue yet, although interestingly enough, I now have a new aero-bottle setup with a computer mount sticking out from the bottle - xlab Torpedo System 100 - and the 910 works there. This isn't a race solution, as there's no way I'm going to transfer computer from wrist to bike (t1) to wrist (t2). So, it seems it has something to do with the angle / movement of the 910 on my wrist. I do have an old 310 which I could test on the computer mount - good idea, Tom and Anthony! Our local LBS just got the new 520 in, so I may go that route too. They literally spent 4 hours yesterday with me trouble-shooting this!! What a weird, frustrating, and costly problem!
  • I am planning on buying the stages PM.

I actually have this BTA http://www.profile-design.com/product/hydration/aero-hc-system/ and I use the 920XT, which I always put on the mount during training and races (I don't care about switching to the wrist before the run)

Do you think I will receive the signal ? because if signal doesnt got thru, I am actually maybe better buying the vector instead of stages + garmin bike computer.. that gets almost to the same cost here in Canada.

    Thanks!
