Trial Week Summary - Gary Lewis

Rich,

I just joined and you sent me a Trial Week Training Plan.  I did an 20' FTP test this morning in Trainer Road, prior to your sending this, just to see where I was at.

I am assuming that with hundreds of people, you don't want to access my individual records on TR, Garmin, etc.  I have attached some of my Garmin History.  Essentially this would eliminate this first week, since I believe I have any data you might be looking for already.....I just don't know how to utilize all of the information I am accumulating.

According to TR:

Zone Time Percent Low High
Active Recovery 00:11:01 19.8% 0 123
Endurance 00:23:19 41.9% 123 150
Tempo 00:21:20 38.3% 150 170
SweetSpot 00:00:00 0% 170 172
Threshold 00:00:00 0% 172 190
VO2Max 00:00:00 0% 190 220

My Garmin info for the last 10K run I completed on 7/8:

Avg HR 161, Max HR 172, Avg Cadence 158, Max Cadence 186, Time 1:05, Avg Pace 10:15, VO2 Max 40

  • Gary,

Don't underestimate the care and insightfulness of the whole team. If you have Strava file links or data links post them. Smart members will chime in with guidance too. I was a member for nearly two full years before I started the Strava habit, now I'm hooked. Just a tip I would pass on to my more junior self.

Welcome to the team. The more you engage, the more you'll get. Don't be shy, jump in, comment, participate, we're a family, a community.
  • Charles,

I appreciate the advice. I am lost on a few fronts. I currently keep all my data on Garmin Connect. My main question revolves around my first week. The training plan seems like an assessment - pre-canned that gets sent to all new members. I have current data, so I don't see the need to waste a week and assess myself again.

My issues are trying to put this data into EN, which I think I now have figured out. Although, I am not sure that the numbers are right according to the sites calculator against my perceived effort.

I consider myself a pretty intelligent person, just need some hand holding to muddle through this place. That's the reason I signed up, was to learn how to use this info to train better, race better, etc.

    Did I mention I HATE acronyms :-)

    Gary,

    • That's correct, the first week is a "Trial Week" training plan, that all new trials are assigned. It includes testing on the weekend so (1) we can set your training zones properly so (2) you're ready to go with your "real" training plan the following Monday.
    • I have no idea how TR sets their training zones but it's important that we are on the same page here with what Zone 2, 3, etc mean. That is, you need to make sure you're calculating your training zones with the Training Zone Calculator we have here, so that your Zone 2 is our Zone 2. With people uploading and keeping logs on various sites (Trainingpeaks, Strava, Garmin, Trainerroad, etc), and most of those having their own zones, it's important that we're all speaking the same EN-zone-language, so to speak.
  • Rich, I determined my power by using TrainerRoad, and I had recently run a 5K, so I had the data from that.  That is what I was trying to express, sorry if I made it more complicated than necessary.  I plugged my numbers into your system with the help of Coach Patrick and got everything worked out.  What he also showed me was which plan to pick and how to change the training plan.

I just didn't want to waste a training week performing tests that I just recently completed.

    I'm all square now.

Yep, thanks. No worries, most Trial Members don't bother to do those test on the weekend, which creates another set of problems in wk2 of their membership so good on you for actually doing what you're told
