Rain tomoro. What should I do?

This is my first week with EN. I actually did a 4.5 hr EN ride last weekend to see how it felt because I am used to the zone 2 stuff. Anyway, its going to rain tomorrow and I don't ride in the rain SO should I do my interval ride or my ABP ride on the trainer tomorrow. The weather looks ok for getting a ride in on Sunday. Believe it or not, I am ok on the trainer for 4 hours. I have done up to 6.  Should I add more intervals in???

  • 6 hours!!!

I would probably do the FTP intervals from the Saturday ride with some 85% (2x15 or 1x30) tacked on at the end and call it the day. The ABP ride would also be preferable to 4.5 hours on the trainer. That's just me though.

You should also post to this thread. It was set up for questions like this and the coaches monitor it..

  • What Matt said. Would also be helpful to know where about in your training plan you are. If this is like week 2 out of 20 and your IM isn't until Sept, then for sure I'd hit the Main Set and drop the rest (or maybe even see if I could swap the Sat/Sun rides if the weather looks like you might get outside on Sunday). But if your inside of 12 weeks from your IM race, then you'll want to get as much of the planned workout in as possible.
  • Where I live, rain is a constant nemesis. 45 minutes or so I can handle, but hours and hours - no way. So I make an art of juggling the training plan days around to make sure I get my long ride in during the most promising spell of possible dry weather. E.g., this week, I did the long ride yesterday, and will do my long run on Sunday, as I can run more esily in rain.

  • Lesley- Being new to EN, I am guessing that you don't know that we don't advocate sitting on a trainer for hours on end. Since I am finishing up OS, I won't ride in the rain. IM training and I suck it up and go ride as long as I feel it can be done safely (No high winds knocking down limbs, etc.).
My trainer limit is 2 hours and I rarely go past 1:45. These are hard interval rides on the trainer (no coasting). Do the WU and MS. Round out the remainder at 85% as you wish, but cutting time on one ride should not be the end of your race, whenever it may be.
  • Thanks for the imput guys! Everyone has been so helpful so far. I am doing Lake Placid so I am in my first week of the 12 week program and I have to say that so far this week has been a struggle with fatigue. I hit all my workouts but I am pretty tired. I was following another plan for 12 weeks prior to this and in lacked this level of intensity so I am still adjusting. Otherwise i would have moved a ride mid week to avoid the weather but I just didn't have the energy level for a 5 hour workout mid week.
  • Impressive! I've been on the trainer for 3 hours (2 movies)...that's my limit. I think I would have to shoot myself before I made 6.
  • Not sure what your "A" race is for the year, but I am going to go against the grain here....RIDE in the RAIN!  Unless you got a weather guarantee for your race that promises no rain.

  • I have no additional advise if you are going to be in on the trainer.  Keep it under 2 hour and more like 1.5.

Having said that I agree with Bryan unless it's cold and raining I head out because you never know what you will get on race day.  I also like to get in at least 2-3 rides in rainy conditions to see how the bike and tires will react.  This year I will be looking at switching to new race tires and I absolutely want to see how they are in the rain.  Nothing saying you have to go out all the time in the rain but it's good to do every once in a while.

  • Thanks guys. I think I am going to suck it up and go outside. It doesn't look like it will last too long if it does start but right now it is just overcast.
